Kavalan Solist Port Cask

Single malt Taiwanese whisky from the King Car Distillery, released as part of their Kavalan Solist range. It was matured in a cask which previously held tasty Port, imparting in-your-face fruitiness.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Light oak spice as it opens, before notes of refreshing tangerine and dried fruit develop.

Palate Chocolate éclairs, summer berries (think blackcurrant and strawberries atop a cheesecake) and vanilla-forward malt.

Finish A zesty hint of passion fruit and lemon appears on the finish.

Not to my taste
I bought this having tried the King Car Conductor and thoroughly enjoying it. This one was not for me - the port finish is hugely over powering and it just dominates everything for me from the nose, to the palette, to the finish. On top of that I found the alcohol in this to be far too over-powering - I had to add water just to tone it down which improved things slightly. It is clearly popular with a lot of people so I either got a bad bottle - entirely possible - or that the force of the port cask finish in it just wasn't to my taste.

Absolutely Fantasic
Strong pungent flavour of port and berries, absolutely delicious and excellent value for money! Cask strength! All of the notes above - like a cola or vimto concentrate blackcurrent, rich flavours on palate long after taste ribenna - delicious!

Port sweetness taste
Port cask aroma and taste easy to feel, better with a few drops of water and some time to breath. Very sweet aroma and easy to drink. Not my favourit palate, but from this type, one of the best for sure.

Strong port flavor, enjoyable
You can definitely taste the port, which makes it sweeter on the nose in particular. Well suited for after dinner. I personally like the sherry Kavalan better but this was still very enjoyable.

Doesn't suit a long period in a port cask IMO.
Port is IMO overpowering. Too strong. A light mellow new make overpowered by the strong presence of port. Even the extra size of the cask does not reduce the strength. IMO fWIIW a shorter period of port maturity would have helped.
