Karuizawa 19yo TBWC Bottling Note

Precious, precious Karuizawa... This is the first bottling of Karuizawa single malt Japanese whisky from That Boutique-y Whisky Company, and it's absolutely astonishing. The whisky from Karuizawa has become the stuff of legend, with a few bottlings finding their way out to whisky enthusiasts from the remaining stocks (Karuizawa closed its doors back in 2000). The label of this bottling sees Atom Brands' Toby Cutler escaping some henchmen in the original Karuizawa distillery as someone watches on from a safe distance. Observing. Somewhat ominously.

Batch 1 is a release of 186 bottles.

‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ bottles single malts, single grains and bourbons from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blended malts and blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: A quilt of pure, earthy, salty, dark and warm notes coexist in masterful harmony here, from the supple fruitiness of Medjool dates, sultanas and preserved cherries to the thick richness of ancient polished oak furniture, menthol tobacco, rancio and worn leather. Caramelised muscovado sugar, almond syrup and wood spice form in the backdrop among lighter elements of green apple and banana as well as black truffle acacia honey.

Palate: A salty manzanilla aspect, a deep resinous earthy quality and various matured game meats emerge through biting tannins and ginger root. As the palate develops there’s a litany of flavours including aged Pinot Noir, soy sauce, bitter chocolate, dried herbs, blackberry and apple crumble and Sherry-rich notes of Christmas cake, blood orange and Maraschino cherries.

Finish: The finish is superbly long, dry, meaty and spice-rich.

Overall: The expectations will be incredibly high for this one. Fortunately it’s totally, utterly brilliant. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on this remarkable whisky we suggest you savour it. Wow.
