Paul John Brilliance

Produced by John Distilleries in Goa, India, the Paul John range of single malt whiskies (named after their Chairman) represents a move into premium spirits for a company who are already big players in the Indian molasses 'whisky' market.

Made using Indian 6-row barley from the Himalayan foothills, Brilliance is matured in bourbon barrels for 3-5 years before bottling at cask strength. (As with Amrut, the tropical climate cause greater evaporation, around 12-13% a year, but in turn they show very well at younger ages.)

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Good core of juicy barley. Ryvita with salted butter. Cinnamon-dusted-red berries, with a little green apple skin following it up.

Palate Chomp Bars - lots of chewy caramel and chocolate here. Picks up from lively spice along the way, with a little bit of waxy orange peel on the mid palate.

Finish Orange lingers. Surprisingly long, with the rye notes from the nose coming back in full force.

Overall A fine Indian single malt from John Distilleries.

Not bad at all
Didn't know what to expect with this one but went for it. Sweet with a wee bit of caramel. Found it disappearing quite easily.....easy drinking and enjoyable

Nothing special
Average score from me.
it seemed stronger than 46% to my taste, i’ve had many a cask strength whisky which is drinkable neat. Water did nothing for the flavour for me.
I only had 3cl sample, which was enough for my curiosity.
Glad I tried it but that’s all.
this is only my opinion mind.

A tasty oily treat.
Superb whisky, slightly tropical and nice and oily. Tastes older than it is and unlike some Indian drops is very well price. I am a fan.

A delight.
Purchased Brilliance a few years ago. Opened August 2020. Love it. Have been privileged to enjoy Cardhu Glenchinchie Cragganmore Oban Glengoyne Dalwhinnie all 12 years plus. This compares very well. For those who like me favour unpeated single malts I whole heartedly recommend Paul John Brilliance.

Not so 'Brilliance' from Paul John
I was a little disappointed with the Paul John 'Brilliance' I read all the reviews on Master of Malt and thought it was worth a go. It's not a bad whisky, but at £35 I think there's a lot better out there, like 12 YO Glendronach on offer at the moment and so many other great single malts! It has a smooth initial taste, but the flavour doesn't last long and I think it shows its young age, with a very spirity finish. For me it's price point should be nearer £26 as it's just marginally better than a blend you might buy.

Wow
Absolutely blown away with this whisky.
Miles ahead of it's price point, well worth picking up. Orchard fruits, spice, long finish, just wow!
