Jameson Caskmates Bottling Note

Jameson Caskmates is an intriguing release. Having sent some of their casks to the local craft stout brewers at Franciscan Well, the casks were returned to Midleton where they were subsequently used to give a stout finish to Jameson!

We tasted it before it was available in the UK when we visited Cork just before St. Patrick's Day 2015, and we know that some of the fine folk at Irish Distillers were worried that it may be seen as a bit of a gimmick. Perhaps to an extent it is, but more importantly, it works - a worthwhile experiment that's produced a unique and interesting Irish whiskey.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: There's still cut grass and some fruit alongside delicious oily pot still character, but things are different here too. Is it sweeter? A different sweetness perhaps, more wood spice plus chocolate liqueur. A shift of emphasis.

Palate: Orchard fruits, great mouthfeel but the vanilla cream is less prominent, it's more fragrant (hoppy?) and floral on the palate with a touch of bitterness.

Finish: Again familiar, but different, that different complexion of spice with chocolate from the nose lingers briefly.

Overall: An interesting twist on an old favourite, and a great gift for Irish whiskey and stout fans alike!

Jameson Caskmates Reviews

Not for me...

The hint of sour due to the beer barrel doesn't suit me at all.

16th November 2020

This has become one of my very favourite whiskies.

I really like the Caskmate stout edition, it is smooth and flavoursome, just what a whiskey should be.

Very good smooth and Morrish.

Just a fantastic surprising flavour. I have not had it before and was surprised at its smoothness. I usually buy Jamiesons hoever this was a beautiful surprise as I bought it as a gift.

Amazingly smooth, creamy and full of flavor. Vanilla coffee finish!

Wonderful wonderful

Extremely smooth whisky! Love the creamy vanilla and oily mouthfeel. I can taste the essence of stout too! The alcohol bite isn’t too bad either. Definitely will be constantly replenished in my personal bar.

Wonderful whiskey lovely with a pint of Guinness smooth taste butterscotch and chocolate comes through for me.
Will order again and again .

Wasn't too sure of this to start off with but it has grown on em and is definitely more-ish.
It's reminiscent of a particularly rich sherry cask but with coffee undertones.
Definitely one to watch out when it's on offer!

Surprisingly good.

Impulse buy at Co-op (reduced to £17) - and I'm surprised - it's excellent. Yes, you can play the 'can I nose/ taste the Stout' game... and you can in the first glass, but after a few sips you get caught up in how easy the stuff is to enjoy without getting Ralfy about it. Definitely creamy, dangerously drinkable.

Much better than Greenspot or Westcork port cask, not as good as Yellowspot (in a class of it's own). Quite frankly this outshines most Scotch blends sub £40.

I get a lot of chocolate character in the nose, sweet and bitter scents, and a sweet apple almond mix. Taste has a sweet nuttiness to it, a short and bitter aftertaste, it's different but the same. Hard to define! Not what I expected. It works well

Taking Irish whiskey to a whole new level...

Hands down a unique and singularly great whiskey. Other than Greenspot and Redbreast I tend to steer clear of Irish because they're too sweet for me but this is on another level. Creamy, with a delicious spicy, bitter cocoa finish. Superb. Can't believe its so cheap. You'd normally pay a lot more for something of this quality.

18th June 2019

For 24 euros in greece its the best!!!!!

Bring me more!!!!!

9th May 2019

Really, really good.

I'm on my third of fourth bottle, and I still get surprised how good this expression really is. I'm stunned that this is non chill filtered, because there is a lot going on.

I especially love the coconut, chocolate and vanilla combo, both on the nose and palate.

A staple for your bar, and enjoyment.

Really smooth and easy to drink. If you enjoy a peaty whiskey this isn't for you. I serve to friends that aren't regular whisky drinkers because it is so easy to enjoy.

16th April 2019

Make it your main drink

Best whisky ever. Very smooth

15th March 2019

Good pour, but a little expensive!

After seeing all of the glorious reviews, I decided to pass by the LCBO in Ontario and buy a bottle of this Caskmates Stout. It has a great scent from the bottle and into a pour. It has heavy taste on the palette, but nothing that sticks out. I detected molasses and toffee, but nothing more. I am happy that I didn't purchase another bottle. This pour us smooth, but nothing special for the premium cost

10th March 2019

Extremely dangerous

Chocolate, coffee and mild hops on the nose. You take a sip and wonder when it’s going to kick doesn’t! I’ve had a lot of good scotch and this is possibly one of the smoothest, creamiest whiskies I have ever tried. Single malt purists might take issue with the relative lack of depth here, but everyone needs a whiskey in their collection that is this supremely drinkable. At this price it might be my next daily tipple for a while.

Intriguingly, leaves my mouth and throat with a familiar bitter cocoa taste akin to finishing off a few pints of Guinness. Not that I’m complaining.

Very nice. Do try it.

Very nice. Yes, more than a hint of the stout on the nose, then chocolate, then vanilla, strawberries and cream, green tea. On the palate smooth, sweet at first, creamy mouthfeel, chocolate, slight bitterness towards the end. Finish medium, sweetness giving way to that hoppy bitterness. As with many whiskies, don't judge this one by the first dram out of the bottle. Give it a while, the next one out will be better!

Best for this price.

An amazing Whiskey. everybody I know who try this absolutely love it
a good all rounder

28th September 2018

My new sipper if it hangs around long enough.

I can say that in 30+ yrs of drinking whisk(e)y I've finished more bottles of Jameson whisky than any other brand. When this bottling came out I was a little skeptical as to how good it would be. Well eventually I caved in through curiosity and purchased a bottle and I'm pleased that I did. I love the citrus profile of Jamesons but this pairing proves how good the basic spirit is as it totally changed in a great way. I will defo be purchasing more, 5*.

Drunk review

The Budweiser of whiskey. Bland no finish . Blackbush, Yellowspot, redbreast. Nuff said (yes I had several whiskeys before writing this)

8th June 2018

Doesn't work - more of a gimmick

In my opinion, they were right to be concerned about this being a "gimmick", rather than an attempt to make a great whiskey. Where Glenfiddich have succeeded (with their "IPA" release), Jameson have completely failed. The flavour combination just doesn't work for me - it adds almost a bitterness to the whiskey which clashes with the signature Jameson smoothness. Great marketing idea, poor execution

31st May 2018

Unique and unique

Fantastic. It smells and taste are delightful. Yes, I'm using the word 'delightful' for a whiskey. The stout notes are detectible, but not overpowering. The finish complements the already wonderful Jameson product.

18th May 2018

A fulsom flavour

A lovely bottle of whiskey to which I saw then purchased in Budapest in duty free. I'd buy again.

17th April 2018

not for me

I can appriciate this whiskey for what it is, i do like how this whiskey came about, but if your like me and do not like stout, i would advise you stay away, if do do like stout, maybe give it a go.

Jameson caskmate

Tried it was amazing.lovely smooth taste to it must try and find who sells it as had it in my local pub

25th February 2018

An Orgy in a Bottle!

This is an orgy of flavors! I picked up a bot from a local duty free, having never bought a Jameson before, I thought it'd be a good gift and would save me giving away a bottle of my single malt scotch collection when required.

So having been on a long detox lasting 3 whole days, my resolve is starting to give hints of fatigue. As I lit a cigar, I got tempted to crack open the Jameson and sneak a try...Its incredibly peaty and smokey and your cant even take a proper whiff. Few attempts later, after my sinuses have been cleared with the intense peat fumes, my long nose is able to find an entire orchard in the glass. Its much too confusing I thought and took a sip to try and break apart the flavors. Complexities continue, but less peaty, a cocktail of fruits, white chocolate and coffee. The taste remains the palette past the short smooth finish.

Its complex, confusing, exciting, above all its mouth watering and you're left longing for another round.

19th September 2017

as i expected

creamy, coffee, cocoa, with long finish
wish it has higher ABV

14th September 2017

Dangerously good

Just bought a bottle, going back for a case before it sells out. If you like your whisk(e)y smooth, rich, a little sweet, with strong notes of chocolate, aniseed, raises and plums, don't hesitate, buy it now before it's too late. I hope this becomes a regular member of the Jameson stable. Unbelievably good value.

16th June 2017

Everything I was lead to believe

Just opened a bottle tonight and was very pleased to find that it lives up to the hype. A most pleasant expression of the brand, no question, it's a keeper and will always have a place on my shelf!

12th March 2017

Worth a try

In picked up a bottle of the stout edition 2 days ago, and wished I picked up a few more. For the price, this is absolutely beautiful and leaves you wanting glass after glass. In would highly recommend this offering. You won't be disappointed.

10th July 2016

I do like to have this jameson
