1776 Straight Rye Whiskey

1776 Rye Bottling Note

1776 Straight Rye Whiskey comes from the James E. Pepper brand, a name that has long been known in the American whiskey world, though not as much recently as it was in the early 1900s. Happily, the 1776 brand has been relaunched and the James E. Pepper legend lives on! This straight rye is made with a mash-bill featuring 90% rye and has been bottled at 50% ABV.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Big, spicy wafts of rye, with hints of clove and cinnamon underneath.

Palate: Orange zest, heavy rye bread and subtle oak influence.

Finish: Long and very spicy.

1776 Straight Rye Whiskey Reviews

A real deal rye whiskey

By real deal, I mean this bottle was put together for whiskey lovers who know what Rye Whiskey should taste like. Rye is the "hip" drink at the moment among the trend chasing hipster crowd. That being said, Peppers put together a Rye meant for sipping and enjoying not posting and hashtagging. Bold spice, thick mouth feel, and a long finish back up my claim. Orange zest, cloves, and cinnamon float through this dram on a silk sheet making this whiskey dangerously easy to enjoy. The nose is a veritable spice market and can sooth the most frayed, overworked nerves. My suggestion is to share with a good buddy not with the social media circus...
Cheers!

Best deal on a real rye

Spice, oak, grain, toast.

Everything you want from a rye at an unbelievable price. Although, I live in New York State and find this for 29 or 30 bucks, so I'm not sure why MoM charges 60...

Either way it's worth it and can hold up to most that cost twice or more. It is light, but packs a punch without anything too boozy on the nose, and is quite smooth for the high proof. Mixes wonderfully and it's my go-to for mixing whiskey. Excellent with good ginger ale.

I did find a bottle to have a deal of sediment at the bottom, which I didn't remember from previous bottles of this. Anyone else find black flecks? Probably just from the barrel and maybe this bottle was filled from the last of a tank or barrel.
Anyway, great whiskey for it's price!

Everything good a rye can be...

An exceptionally good rye, especially considering the price. Big, spicy, smooth and full of flavour. Definitely worth a try if rye is your thing. Hard to imagine you'd be disappointed.

Glad I finally got around to opening this.

I'm no expert on Rye. I bought this on a whim after I tried Bulleit Rye, on balance I prefer this by a wafer. I've tried Rittenhouse Rye 100 proof & Jim beam Yellow, and found them satisfactory but not special. I guess I like the high rye content on the mash-bill? Agree with the notes on the nose, spice and yes you really get the grain, and its there in spades too when you taste. Long finish. I'm not a cocktail type but this is good straight or with a little ice. I'll probably buy this again in the future.
