The Johnny Hepp hails from the Hepp Distillery based in Uberach in Alsace, hence why it is dubbed Whisky Alsacien. The Hepp family were, at the beginning of the 19th century, travelling distillers, using fruit from the orchards in Uberach and distilling it. It wasn't until 2007 when the family moved into the whisky business. The no age statement single malt has been matured in both bourbon barrels and casks which have previously housed French white wine, giving lots of green fruit and spicy notes.
Floral peony, underripe pear, vanilla oak and candied orange, with sawdust aromas and lots of aromatic baking spice.
Tinned plums in syrup, more pear, tart underripe berries and a burst of grape, with citrus peel and cardamom.
Spicy oak, fresh hay and green leafy notes.
Interesting whisky which has a lovely nose which doesn’t have the sting that is normally associated with younger whiskies. The wine barrel does its job splendidly here. A good whisky for someone who is new to whiskies to start with.
