Kura The Whisky Bottling Note

The Helios distillery in Okinawa Japan may be more well-known for producing rums and awamori (a type of rice-based drink only produced in Okinawa), but they been known to dip their toe in the world of whisky. Kura The Whisky is a blended malt (or as the a label says, a "pure malt") produced by Helios and bottled at 40% ABV. Intriguing stuff...

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Toasted oak and a touch of moss, creamy lemon and soft malt.

Palate: Brown sugar, burnt oak again (now with a touch of earthiness to it), lime marmalade.

Finish: Rye bread and a touch of bitter grape.

Kura The Whisky Reviews

Excellent

Very good, smooth whiskey with a touch of sweetness I guess coming from rum barrel with a very pleasant smoke finish

Sucks.

Not impressed at all. Expecting more.

Beyond words......

Very accurate low end reviews on this site, I wish I had read them instead of making this benighted spontaneous purchase at Costco. Where do I start? The nose has a strong hint of antiseptic on a band-aid and might have singed a few nostril hairs. If arsenic wasn't tasteless, I imagine this is what it would taste like. The finish might have been tantamount to rusty razors blades. My co-tasters taste buds were also inconsolable. Since Costco does not except returns on alcohol, the next time I touch this bottle might be to disinfect my toilet.

Excellent

I got a bottle of this from a friend who did not like Whisky and I have to say I truly enjoyed it very much even my wife who is very picky when it comes to any type of alcohol loved it. It does have a unique taste but very smooth and we enjoyed the smooth smokyafter taste of the whisky

Darn good

People given this a bad rating have no clue about peated whisky. It’s very good. Sharp clean with a little smoke.

Don’t fall for this marketing ploy

It taste like a young Scotch that was smoked over a dumpster fire. Vile. May be the fist bottle of booze that I ever pour down my sink.

The worst ever

This is by far the worst whiskey I have ever tasted. It tasted like burn wood and cough medicine rolled into one bottle.

Tastes like my new favourite!

Great whisky, absolutely loved the smooth sweetness, very easy drinking - I think I found my new everyday dram!

Tastes like Scotch stored in a barrel of asphalt!

I was looking forward to this whisky since I had heard good things about it. Bought a 750 ml bottle at Costco for $45 (US). Saw it for sale online for $129 -$169! Costco must be a good deal!

Couldn’t wait to try it! I was hugely disappointed! It’s described as tasting of sour grapes, earth, molasses...etc. It doesn’t taste like any of those things! It tastes like Scotch stored in a barrel of asphalt! It is frickin’ nasty! This is Scotch imported from Scotland to Okinawa, then stored in rum casks (how long?). I swear to God it tastes like Scotch poured over fresh asphalt! Don’t waste your money! Too many good whiskey’s on the market!
