Glenfiddich Experimental Series - IPA Cask Finish

Part of Glenfiddich's Experimental Series comes a single malt which was finished for three months in casks which previously held IPA! Created collaboratively by Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman and IPA expert Seb Jones, the IPA which was in the casks before the whisky was specially brewed for this expression by the Speyside Craft Brewery. Bound to be a fascinating whisky for whisky and beer enthusiasts alike (and the cross-over of that Venn diagram, too).

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nice sweet whisky from a silly experiment

A strange experiment that sounded terrible on paper. I avoided this for a while, not being a fan of Glenfiddich or the idea of finishing a whisky in this way. Tried one in a pub last night and had a couple more. As a peat head, I found this to be a sweet whisky. I tasted no hoppy beer notes, but I was also drinking a hoppy ale through the night. I believe what you have recently eaten and drank alters the taste of a whisky. Nonetheless, this experiment may never be repeated, but this was a nice whisky. My favourite Glenfiddich having tried the 18, 15 and 12 before. I might even buy a bottle (if it is on special offer).

    The Experiment that Went Wrong

Bought a Bottle with a mate as we heard great things about it. Severely, severely disappointed. Tried it by itself, gave it air and time, gave it water, gave it ice, and every single time we were disappointed knowing we could have spent that money on something far more interesting. The IPA barrels seems to just absorb the angels share and the angels give nothing in return. Spend your money on something else, like a Compass Box experiment.

    Hoppy waft

The best Glenfiddich I've tried to date (which, although it may sound like it, isn't high praise). Palate has lost the usual Glenfiddich roughness/abbrasiveness but this leaves very little else to it. Hoppy waft carries over from the nose.

An interesting dram but nothing remarkable.

The best Glenfiddich I've tried to date (which, although it may sound like it, isn't high praise). Fairly mild aroma with the hops taking centre-stage. Palate lost the usual rough/abrasive 'Fidich character but that left little else to it. An interesting dram but nothing remarkable.

    Excellent.

Very smooth with citrus notes. Very nice aroma with a sweet vanilla finish. I highly recommend this Scotch!
