Glenfiddich IPA Cask Bottling Note

Part of Glenfiddich's Experimental Series comes a single malt which was finished for three months in casks which previously held IPA! Created collaboratively by Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman and IPA expert Seb Jones, the IPA which was in the casks before the whisky was specially brewed for this expression by the Speyside Craft Brewery. Bound to be a fascinating whisky for whisky and beer enthusiasts alike (and the cross-over of that Venn diagram, too).

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Producer's Tasting Note:
Nose: An elegant harmony of fresh green apple, William’s pear and spring blossom. Complimented with Aromatic hops and fresh herbs.
Palate: Vibrant with a zesty citrus note followed by creamy vanilla and a hint of fresh hops.
Finish: Enduring sweetness with an echo of green hops.

Glenfiddich Experimental Series - IPA Cask Finish Reviews

Nice sweet whisky from a silly experiment

A strange experiment that sounded terrible on paper. I avoided this for a while, not being a fan of Glenfiddich or the idea of finishing a whisky in this way. Tried one in a pub last night and had a couple more. As a peat head, I found this to be a sweet whisky. I tasted no hoppy beer notes, but I was also drinking a hoppy ale through the night. I believe what you have recently eaten and drank alters the taste of a whisky. Nonetheless, this experiment may never be repeated, but this was a nice whisky. My favourite Glenfiddich having tried the 18, 15 and 12 before. I might even buy a bottle (if it is on special offer).

The Experiment that Went Wrong

Bought a Bottle with a mate as we heard great things about it. Severely, severely disappointed. Tried it by itself, gave it air and time, gave it water, gave it ice, and every single time we were disappointed knowing we could have spent that money on something far more interesting. The IPA barrels seems to just absorb the angels share and the angels give nothing in return. Spend your money on something else, like a Compass Box experiment.

Hoppy waft

The best Glenfiddich I've tried to date (which, although it may sound like it, isn't high praise).

Palate has lost the usual Glenfiddich roughness/abbrasiveness but this leaves very little else to it. Hoppy waft carries over from the nose.

An interesting dram but nothing remarkable.

The best Glenfiddich I've tried to date (which, although it may sound like it, isn't high praise). Fairly mild aroma with the hops taking centre-stage. Palate lost the usual rough/abrasive 'Fidich character but that left little else to it.
An interesting dram but nothing remarkable.

Excellent.

Very smooth with citrus notes. Very nice aroma with a sweet vanilla finish. I highly recommend this Scotch!

Surprisingly excellent

The wife and have wanted to try this for a while, but only felt brave yesterday.
It’s an excellent dram, quite unique, so I’m sorry we waited.
It’s sweet, fairly strong and very enjoyable.
From now on it’ll always be amongst our other favourites.

Very good!

It was really nice, the MoM description does it quite well but I would like to add vanilla, honey and wet grass to the nose and some spicyness and alot of apple and pear to the palate.
The finish is mid/long

Nice to try

light, zesty ,smooth......

Smooth but no character

I'm a big fan of IPA and Glenfiddich so was expecting big things. I didn't get any hoppy notes at all which was a huge disappointment. Can't relate at all to the other comments describing "a hoppy citrus finish". As for the whisky - it's smooth enough but pretty one-dimensional with no character. Won't buy again (and unusually, am taking a long time to finish this bottle).

Bloody awful.

Uninspiring, sweetish, smooth, light yet unpleasantly cloying - I really don't get it - no IPA beer / hop taste either. Truly a pointless spirit which barely merits the name 'whisky'. Unusually it is pretty much the same with or without water. Makes you wonder how many of the 5* reviews below are written by paid up 'brand ambassadors'.

Nice bottle. Shame about the contents. And I HAVE tasted the whisky and these are genuine comments.

Very good - Lacking some body

As an avid IPA and single malt enthusiast, this was a must purchase. It is very good - clean, crisp, with a hoppy citrus finish. However, I feel like it could use more body and perhaps the IPA vs. Scotch flavor profiles are best left separated.

Smooth

Smooth, light on the palate, and tasty... I love it.

Fantastic and stunning taste

Smoothest malt ever

11th September 2017

Admirably stunning

Innis and Gunn have been finishing of their beer in whisky casks for a while now so it's a bold move to finish off a whisky in a beer cask. And one that glenfiddich have admirably pulled off! Will definitely buy this crossover again.

Expensive, would buy again!

absolutely delish!!!

28th March 2017

Not worth it

Definitely not one I will drink again

27th March 2017

Please enlighten me

What does it do to justify the price? Is this a 3 year old whisky that's been in an IPA cask for 3 months? I'm not seeing the attraction.

Moves to my Private Collection

I don't often drink beer, but when I do, I reach for an IPA.

I bought this based on my love for both scotch and IPAs. It did not disappoint...

Apples, citrus and Hops and very smooth. Not sure I will be sharing this one. Hops lovers need to try this one.

A fun experiment

So I am from California and our beer of choice is the IPA and we brew some of the best and hoppiest in the world so when I first tried this had a hard time picking up the hop notes but after sitting around for a bit and giving this another chance I can definitely taste some nice zesty hops with citrus and slightly tart green apple. Has the drying effect of hops as well. This is very interesting stuff probably won't buy again due to the price but it was certainly worth trying once. The sugarbear

Excellent

I tried this tonight at a friend's party - smooth, easy, great taste - just loved it. Will be in my collection for sure.

Granny smith

Granny smith is the first thing i seem to smell on this.
pleasant aroma's, powerfull aroma's too.
very enjoyable.
i seem to recognize challanger hops. both citrussy and floral aroma's seem to walk hand in hand with lots of wood. i like it a lot.

16th November 2016

Superb!

One of the few whiskies I enjoy without a touch of water, this is a superb dram and far too easy drinking. This will be a classic and if the rest of the experimental series is as good as this one, then we are in for a treat.
Buy two, one for drinking (you have to taste how good it is!) and one for keeping, I believe it'll be a firm favourite of collectors in no time.

Easty

I found this so suprising and so delicious it was amazing.
It was fresh, fruity and full of citrus with a nice small touch of hops right at the end.
