Glenfiddich 21yo Reserva

A fabulous 21 Year Old bottling from Glenfiddich, and as its name suggests this particular single malt was finished in casks used previously to age Caribbean rum for four months! Some cask influence in the form of tropical fruit and spicy ginger to be found in here.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Barley sugar, malt and dark brown sugar, with orange peels, marmalade, manuka honey, chocolate and foam bananas.

Palate Full, fruitcake, spices, buttery vanilla, malty, with oak and candied ginger.

Finish Long, with notes of mochaccino and marmalade.

Reviews for Glenfiddich 21 Year Old Gran Reserva
Stands test of time
First bought this in Greece for about €40 after reading Raw Spirit by Iain Banks. I didn’t think a Glenfiddich could be so good ;)
I’m 2/3rds through my 2nd bottle now, which is 6 years old and I’m sitting on the latest issue (orange box) I was given 18 months ago.
Reading the reviews I’ve been tempted to approach bottle No 2 and pour a nip. It’s nearly Christmas after all!
It is wonderfully smooth malt whisky and I will have to resist returning to the rarely opened bottle for a 2nd tasting!

Here is wisdom: Give it the time it deserves for the best result ;)
On reading the reviews the reviews posted of 'not worth the money' or 'disappointing', I can only think that the reviewers had so little understanding of what they had bought, that they missed the point.

Glenfiddich 21 is NOT a whisky you buy to drink with the lads whilst the football is on. The idea of such a one, is to save it for a special occasion. I treated myself to one in July '14 in advance of my 30th birthday in the following February. This is the intent with the sale anything beyond an 18 year old from any distillery because, to open and drink it straight from delivery isn't going to give you the best experience.

For my part, that was the intent, although there was an unexpected birth in the December (nephew was due in March) which, was reason enough for it to be opened at Christmas.

Having let it sit there for five months with (I suppose) different ambient temperatures to wherever it came from, it was as described and was very smooth - like drinking mineral water would be the mot juste - and a great celebratory day for all concerned.

Three months later, when I went back to it, it had changed and had what I can only call a little more depth to the flavours - this attained by obeying the rule that you hold the whisky in the mouth for as many seconds as the years on the bottle and it's a different experience again.

Best advice to all: buy it again and when you get it, leave it until a just occasion arises.
