Distilled in September 2002 and bottled in September 2011, this most unusual 9 year old Glenfarclas has been taken from two Oloroso sherry hogshead casks, and can be perfectly described as an ‘aperitif whisky’ - nutty and intensely savoury.
A whiff of salted almonds is overtaken by sherry – somewhere between Manzanilla and Fino – surprising, since this was matured solely in Oloroso. With warmth applied, the caramel-rich Oloroso starts to come through, with a hint of Brazil nut shell.
Starts off big with just a smidge of sweetness before the savoury Fino takes over. An almost saline note creeps through before moving into blue agave tequila, with a hint of lime zest bitterness.
Dries out, with freshly-shaved oak, Christmas spices, and a touch of pine. Very moreish.
A seriously grown-up whisky, miles away from a standard Glenfarclas - further even than the refill Bourbon matured Family Casks. Glenfarclas, usually an after-dinner treat, is firmly in the aperitif camp here. Superb with smoked almonds or sharp cheeses.

I really enjoyed this whisky and regret that I only bought one bottle. Very thick and lush sherry monster, that does fine in December as well. One of my favourites for 2011.
Just tatsed the sample, a pitty I didn't try it earlier as now is sold out... Fruitjam (cherry), sherry and nuts. Very tasty!
I bought a bottle of this Glenfarclas because I was curious and also to support Movember and the contribution to prostrate cancer. First impressions were of an unusually dark whisky, when poured this impression was reinforced, but get your nose into the glass and the aroma of this is almost tangible. I defy anyone who remembers old fashioned travelling funfairs of their youth not to be taken back there, it smells of toffee apples, real, old fashioned toffee apples! In the mouth, it is huge, smooth, immensely caramalized with a nice bit of fire and a wonderful after taste that simply makes you want to take another sip or two! If tasting is believing, then I am a believer! I am going to get another bottle of this right away as I am so impressed that I am quickly converting my malt loving friends to this wonderful Glenfarclas! Superb!!!
