Glendalough Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Glendalough Pot Still Bottling Note

A wonderful pot still whiskey from Glendalough over in the Wicklow Mountains just outside of Dublin. It's made from a 1:2 mashbill of malted and unmalted Irish barley, and obviously distilled in a pot still - the whiskey wasn't distilled by Glendalough, though it was distilled to their specification by an unnamed distillery. It's matured in bourbon casks and then finished for a year in Irish virgin oak casks, made from sustainably felled 140 year old trees from the forests surrounding the distillery. Bottled up at 43% ABV, the oak finish gives a lot of green notes to this otherwise rather creamy whiskey.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Raw malt aromas, with tannic oak, creamy vanilla notes and some oak char, with a wave of cinnamon spice.

Palate: Crystallised ginger and candied citrus, banana custard and maple syrup, leading into green oak and dried herbs.

Finish: Aromatic clove and more creamy vanilla, alongside some red berries and toasted oak.

Glendalough Pot Still Irish Whiskey Reviews

Disappointing

I really wanted to like this, especially after the outstanding Double Barrel version but it's really not to my taste at all. There is a real pine tree / cut grass smell and flavour throughout and although it does have a unique style it's really not for me which is very disappointing considering it cost £45!

As Irish as it gets

Now I have been really into Irish whiskey lately so as soon as we got this at the shop I knew I was going to be drinking it later that night. My first experience with Glendalough was the double barrel which I honestly wasn't really a fan of just too harsh and prickly on the palate but the story alone of how this whiskey was made sold me on it instantly. This is an entirely different whiskey and not just from double barel but all other Irish whiskey can't think of another one that tastes quite like this. On the nose I get cinnamon, red apples, musty oak, and that freshly cut wood smell you get when using a powersaw on some boards. On the palate some tannins but nothing nearly like what you'd find in a bourbon, very oaky with a lot of spices and interesting green wood notes with a nice creamy mouthfeel, maybe a hint of mocha and some maple syrup sweetness in there too but this isn't nearly as sweet as a lot of other Irish stuff I've had lately ,the Irish oak is definitely the star of the show on this one I love the fact it's aged in native oak harvested from forests near the distillery. This couldn't be more Irish if it poured green. Awesome stuff. Slainte! The Sugarbear
