Glen Elgin 16yo 2006

Get your tasting glass ready, you're in for a treat! This single malt hails from Speyside's Glen Elgin distillery and spent 16 years maturing between 2006 and 2022. Initially resting in a single refill hogshead, the whisky was treated to a finish in an oloroso sherry cask, imparting oodles of sweet fruit notes to the delicate malt at its core. The whisky was bottled up by us, here at Master of Malt, releasing a total of 312 bottles as part of our Single Cask series.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Sharp pressed apple juice and tangy cooking apples, plus a touch of white grape and zingy gooseberry. Fluffy pancakes bring a helping of golden syrup, with rich notes of dark orange chocolate.

Palate Super fruity – like a mixed fruit salad, dusted with icing sugar. Things develop to become jammier with juicy cherries and berries opening the way for some oak and spice.

Finish A long finish of sweet candy floss, peach, and toasted marshmallow, leaving behind warm murmurs of ginger, nutmeg, and cassis.

Great value
Recommend you ignore the 1 star review below - a fantastic whisky for the money.

Should have gone into blends
For me I get almost zero of the Glen Elgin spirt just an offputting overbearing sour sherry taste. Theres reason why this is £50, no doubt a tired old cask in need of sherry to try and save it, not worked at all for me. Seems to be dividing opinions which is good.

Excellent whisky and great value
A lovely fruity Glen Elgin. I’m surprised by the previous one star review saying all they can taste is the oloroso finish. For me, its the fruity Glen Elgin distillate and the bourbon cask which comes through above all else. Orchard fruit in abundance and tropical notes too. A quality 16yo malt at cask strength for £50 is something to celebrate.

Excellent Juice
Rich, loads of sherry notes, and with quality in the underlying spirit.

Great stuff and exceptional value.

Not recommended
Tasted of nothing except a sherry cask finish. Doesn’t seem like the initial maturation achieved anything at all, which may explain why someone felt the need to finish this whisky in another cask. Wouldn’t recommend at all, and don’t see how anyone can have come up with the Tasting Notes above. Have already reviewed this once, but my review hasn’t appeared.
