Another addition to the Gelston's range of wonderful Irish whiskey, this 5 Year Old single malt was aged in first-fill bourbon casks and then treated to a finish in sherry casks for around 160 days (or just over five months, if that's how you like to group your measurements of time). Bottled up at 41.2% ABV, creamier notes from the whiskey are bolstered by a good hit of spice from the cask finish. A fab cocktail contender, this.
A good dose of festive spices, with melted white chocolate drizzled over forest fruits.
Toasted fruitcake and zesty notes of orange peel, with clear sherry influence in the form of dark chocolate and berries.
Creaminess returns on a lengthy finish, with more dried fruit and cinnamon.

I'm rather new to Irish whiskey. I'm a scotch drinker first and foremost with a taste for the higher end American gear too. I've never really considered Irish on the back of only experiencing jamesons and Bushmills. However what with teeling being very agreeable I thought I'd branch out. I had the 12 of this in rum cask finish. Absolutely delightful but at £75 is hard to justify. Decided to take a punt on this as it's a fair price and slightly over the 40%abv. It's very nice it still carries the core flavour well even for its young age. The sherry cask finish is a nice touch., no px but it's bolsters the finish. Big fan, shame the 12 are so pricey. M.
