Smashing stuff from the FEW distillery in Illinois. This rye whisky follows FEW's standard high rye mash bill consisting of 70% Midwestern rye, 20% local corn, and 10% malted barley. Fermented with wine yeast from France’s Loire Valley, the whisky is matured in air-dried oak barrels. You might have noticed the glorious ruby hue of this six-year-old expression, and that's because it was treated to a finish in a Port cask before being bottled up by That Boutique-y Whisky Company to join its USA Series.
Batch 5 is a release of 398 bottles.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottles limited edition whiskies from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.
Generous layers of roasted coffee beans and toasted rye bread drizzled with honey. There's a touch of menthol nestled beneath, with woody spice and chalky grist.
Juicy forest fruits and dark chocolate bring dense, jammy sweetness, bolstered by leathery oak and rye spice.
Stewed berries, cherries, cacao, and cracked black peppercorns.
I bought this for my wife as a birthday gift; her staple bourbon is JB White and I wanted to broaden and elevate her tastes. Got her some Baby Blue Corn Balcones and this. I've had the FEW bourbon before, but this is on another level entirely. Firstly, it doesn't taste like a rye whiskey - it tastes like a really, really good bourbon, despite the mash bill being otherwise. Rich, deep, complex. Coffee, rye, wood, forest fruits, spice, chocolate. Splendid!
