A superb and unusual Highland whisky, Ballechin is heavily peated Edradour, and this is the 6th release in the range, aged in a bourbon cask. Very tasty!
Light, musty smoke, hints of farmyards, vanilla spice, gentle peat, forest floors and pepper.
Smoky and nutty, some marzipan, hazelnut, custard, olive oil and lapsang souchong.
Herbal, floral and toasty, some vanilla and oak.
I was very curious about this Whisky having bought this after visiting the Distillery. Having planned an evening to enjoy this bottle I was more than pleasantly suprised! The bottle states this a heavily peated whisky and this is not an understatement. The nose is very peaty and sweet. Tastewise: Lovely toffee/caramel and oak flavours with nicely balanced fruit with a good amount of citrus and vanilla. There is a lot going on but I mostly get creamy dried lemon with toffee. The peat is quite strong but nice and balanced. It does seem a bit closed on the palate though. Some water really opens it up and brings (even!) more flavour to the foreground. The finish is big peaty and long. After every sip it leaves you with all the beautifull flavours lingering around in the mounth for quite a while. A lovely dram to spend an evening with!
This is the best whiskey I had! And the fact that I was there in Edradours Destillery when I first taste it doesn't make it less good :) Really heavy and smokey. So good!
