Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Bottling Note

All the way from the legendary Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, comes Eagle Rare 10 Year Old. A spectacular Kentucky straight Bourbon whiskey, matured for at least a decade before making its way into its distinctive bottles at 45% ABV. What's so distinctive about the bottles, you ask? Well, we're going to say it's the massive bald eagle, wings outstretched, looking like it's about to snatch up some dinner. Distinctive, yes? The whiskey is also pretty distinctive too, boasting full-bodied notes of cinder toffee, orange peel and buttery corn.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Toasted oak gives way to flamed orange peel and maple syrup.

Palate: Honey, buttered bread, oily walnuts and a touch of red fruit.

Finish: Vanilla, oak spice and a little bit of old leather.

Eagle Rare 10 Year Old Reviews

For me it’s the best out there

I drink a lot of bourbon and I’ve tried all the widely available brands in the UK, in the £20 to £40 range. I always comeback to Eagle Rare, it’s just so smooth with a taste hint of vanilla and burnt caramel.

Surprised by some of the negative reviews, but everyone’s tastebuds are different.

It’s a 5 star bourbon for me ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

12th October 2020

Inoffensive, slightly overpriced but passable

This is okay. It's not as sweet as regular Buffalo Trace in my opinion (I prefer the regular). It's passable. Not worth the money when you can get better for less.

6th September 2020

Overhyped, overpriced

Regular buffalo trace is better.

20th July 2020

Brilliant, regret leaving it out!

Like others I regret I am late to the party with this. Tops most of its rivals in my opinion. I thought wild turkey 101 was the best of the bunch vs makers mark, woodford or four Rose's. Bargain price, and rivals many single barrels, I have it just edging JDs single barrel select for enjoyment. Onto the next one!

17th May 2020

Better than I thought

I put this one my list, due to the reviews listed below, and I am glad I did. I actually get Honey and buttered bread on the palate, normally I just read the tasting notes and go, nope I did not get what people say. Adding a few drops of water, really opens this drink up. I have already added to my list to buy again.

4th May 2020

This has been on by list to buy for sometime, now I wish I had brought sooner. The tasting notes from Master of Malt, are very close to what I detected. This is now on my list to purchase again.

2nd May 2020

I'll be getting this again

I was very pleasntly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Had my first glass at bottle strenght but added a drop of water to my second glass and this really brought out the flavour. Oak and cherry dominate for me. Not had a lot of experience with bourbon, this one has made me a fan.

9th April 2020

Best there is for the money.

Honey, spices and Vanilla galore. One of the best Bourbons, and at an incredible price.
Ive been drinking this as a go to for many years..

12th February 2020

An odd one

As an avid fan of Buffalo Trace I couldn't wait to try Eagle Rare. I wasn't disappointed. My pallet is not the most sophisticated, so I won't delve into the intricate tasting notes. What I will say though is classic bourbon - the oak and fruit is all there. 10 years aged certainly makes this smooth, almost too much so. It's very drinkable and more-ish. As a Brit who has to pay a premium for good bourbon, this has become a firm favourite. Dropped to 4/5 stars as it could do with just a little more bite. For the price Wild Turkey 101 is perhaps the better deal.

8th February 2020

Breakfast Bourbon

Reminds me of Raisin Bran: whiffs of bran, raisins, sugar. It’s good, but not overly impressive. A good value at MSRP-don’t pay more. Nice part of my collection.

13th January 2020

Nice sweet whiskey with just enough complexity to keep it in stock in any home cupboard.

ER 10yr has fairly strong and sweet corn notes along with a vanilla blast and a solid and very welcome hit of oak to balance it out. As a casual sipper, no complaints. ER tastes very similar to regular Buffalo Trace and considering that they share the same mash bill, which is 85%corn <10%rye and 5% barley that is no surprise Around my city Lincoln Ne, Buffalo Trace is usually priced about 5 to $7 cheaper than ER 10 yr , but I still keep a bottle of ER 10yr in my private stash with no regrets.

22nd November 2019

Amazing berry flavour

At first it tasted like wood, a bit nutty and barrel spices so I thought this was average at best. Then the berries hit me.
I never expected a bourbon to be so delectably fruity like a berry potpourri.
Sure the mouthfeel is unremarkable, but the smell and flavour are enjoyable and solid. It's been aged enough that nothing sticks out in a bad way, all the roughness has been sanded off. Maybe that's one of its weakness? apart from the barrel spice and unconventional berry flavour it's nothing too special, but when you just want to kick back and sip then this is perfect. Just don't expect something overly complex.
It's 45%, stands out by being a fruity bourbon, not overly sweet, aged enough to get it mellowed, and quasi single barrel (you might get a bit two barrels mixed together if at the end/beginning of a cask but for all intents and purposes this is a single barrel).
If you like bourbon and want to try something different and fruity (a bit like irish whiskey but not quite), or if you just want an introduction to single barrels then this one is a damn solid choice! Especially for the price.

10th October 2019

Mediocre whiskey

ER is a muted bourbon... If you actually want some flavor and complexity get something else. Seriously I don't know what all the hype is all about this is JUST a mediocre whiskey.

3rd October 2019

Dangerously smooth in an old fashioned

I like smooth sweet bourbon.....and this is both. Maybe there is something better for me out there for 30$ ...I hadn't found it.

18th September 2019

Gave this a try as couldnt get Buffalo Trace 45% in UK.Its rather good, dark, full flavoured and nice finish.Bought Wild Turkey 101 too, which has completely different, more difficult flavours to deal with.Quite pricey at £35,so its a one off here.Back to single malts now!🥃🥃

1st September 2019

Too smooth

A bourbon needs a bite, and this one doesn't have one.

After and during drinking I'm sensing cheap brandy and nit premium bourbon.

23rd August 2019

Just great

Its just great. I tried many and this is the best

9th August 2019

eagle rare 10 year old bourbon

I relay like this Bourbon. I bought a bottle of this as well as a bottle of Woodford Reserve to compare them and see which I prefer and the Eagle Rare wins hand down, I really notice the extra 2% ABV and the flavour in the mid palate is far superior in the Eagle Rare.
It has a delicious lingering sweetness and just the right amount of spice that I like in a bourbon. Amazon currently selling Buffalo Trace for £18 is hard to beat but I think I prefer the Eagle Rare enough to pay the extra money for it. 4.5 stars

2nd July 2019

Good, but not great

This is a good bourbon, but not excellent. Given the general sentiment around this whiskey seems to be fairly glowing (the odd negative review below aside), I was fairly disappointed. To my taste, this is possibly slightly over-aged and the one dimensional oaky tannins, that reveal themselves particularly in the mid palate and finish demonstrate too much cask influence and for me, kill off some off the vibrancy, lightness and extra complexity through the mid-palate that I enjoy in a younger whiskey. The mouth feel is also fairly thin and disappointing and the finish is short. I prefer the standard Buffalo Trace bourbon, which I think really is an excellent benchmark bourbon and one of the best value money can buy.

6th June 2019

Smooth to taste

24th April 2019

Missing Something in the Middle

Perhaps people are conflating the Single Barrel version with the newer “no less than 10 yrs” version? Here’s my take in the latter:

Mouthfeel: Thin and weak
Nose: Smells like Buffalo Trace with a bit more oak, sweet, light char, caramel, hints of nuts
Taste: I called this the heavy metal bourbon. Highs and lows with mids scooped in the middle. Something is just missing here and I can’t put my finger on it. Nothing offensive but missing the addictive full body balance you get out of say an Elijah Craig Barrel proof. Oak forward, caramel, and maybe hint of peanuts. A 3 note bourbon.
Finish: Gone before you know it. Maybe hints of oak a minute or two after the last drop but nothing to remind you of what you just drank.

Overall, I’d say if you care for this particular flavor profile just buy the more readily available Buffalo Trace and call it a day. I just did a blind taste at the distillery gift shop this weekend and I picked Buffalo Trace over Eagle Rare every time.

9th January 2019

Smooth but boring. Overrated in my opinion.

I’ve tried to like it, but it just doesn’t do it for me. On the upside, it is a very smooth drink and would probably make a nice mixer. However, I find it smooth to the point of watery and boring. Compared to many others, the bourbon flavor here is overpowered by the alcohol content. I’m not usually a fan of in-your-face drinks either.

6th December 2018

6 stars

Amazing! With my lasting memory or Bourbon being JD and coke in my 20s I was reluctant to try again in. However as I approach 40 and having made my way round a good number of scotch and Indian single malts I gave this a try. Truly one the best spirits I have ever tried. 45 percent makes all the difference for the arrival. Stunning at any price!!

25th October 2018

A must buy if you like robust Whisky

Absolutely loved it. My mouth just explodes with delight when even the smallest dram enters it. Sweet and woody at it's best. It's made me a true convert from Whisky.

16th October 2018

Very good

I can’t understand the adverse reviews of this lovely mature bourbon.
I know people’s taste differs but to my taste it is very good indeed.

21st September 2018

Can’t be beat

Hard to beat for the price! Stupid of me to say since it’s becoming less available, but it’s a great value.

16th September 2018

Good standby bourbon

A bit thin and unremarkable, but with enough flavor and punch to be a big step up from bottom-shelf bourbons. This is a good mixer, or it can serve as a standby bourbon to keep on the shelf for the times when you have finished off your good stuff and need a drink.

30th August 2018

Over priced over hyped

It's nice but nothing to shout home about. Over priced buy about £10 adding a little water helps bring out some extra tones but still over priced in my opinion

19th August 2018

Why the hate?

I've had my fair share of bourbons, they are either a little brittle, or a little to potent on the normal wood notes or sweetness, the balance of this little gem though? Damn near perfect. If you want a good sipping bourbon that doesn't compound but gentle waves over the flavours, this would be a mighty fine choice. Highly recommended.

16th July 2018

Not my thing at all. Tastes like drinking fermented violin rosin juice. No. No and no. I do not like this. Wood is a good taste accessory to whisky but one should not drink wood juice and call it whiskey.

5th July 2018

Good but overpriced bourbon for what it is

As others said, the nose is very promising, but palate is disappointingly flat in comparison, towards a drier finish that somewhat is not matching the nose. Tame, or better, well behaved on a verge of being bleak.
What I really liked about it was how approachable it is at 45%, very friendly neat, no burn for the seasoned bourbon fan.
Yes, the age statement is fine and 10 years in oak barrel is long enough for bourbon to develop, but it's just not my taste profile. I really wanted to enjoy it big time so I approached it with a lot of positiveness but drinking it I was thinking about other, better and cheaper bourbons I had a chance to taste to date.
It costs 50 euro in Ireland, way overpriced for what it is. It is a well made bourbon and you can tell the quality but not worth my money I'm afraid.

3rd May 2018

Terribly disappointing

Can't believe all the reviewers mentioning how smooth this was. Been running down the aisle at the local labor store and so far this bottle is the closest to paint thinner I've found. Ok as a mixer with plenty of mix but evil to drink neat.

28th April 2018

Never without.

Just ordered another bottle, I’m never without this in my collection. Couldn’t recommend it more.

6th April 2018

Smooth but bland

I'm afraid I must agree with some of the other criticisms of this bourbon. As a mixer, fine, but just a bit too bland to be drunk neat. Now don't get me wrong, it certainly is smooth but a tad inoffensive.

The nose starts off relatively promising. Faint aromas of melon and honey to begin with and unmistakable oak. However, the palate leaves much to be desired. Goes down smooth but leaves very little on the tongue. Lasting oak and then.... more oak. Vanilla? Perhaps I was looking for a spicier kick, typical of many other bourbons.

5th April 2018

Cracking Bourbon

This stuff is brilliant. Real winner for the money. My go to bourbon. Nothing really compares for sub £35 in the Kentucky bracket. Buy if your a bourbon fan!

2nd March 2018

Tried it last night for the first time and I agree with the majority of the reviewers, it’s a great bourbon...I’ve just ordered two bottles!

27th February 2018

Good, but not worth the bump in price

This is a smooth, varied bourbon that is quite pleasant to drink. It's primary problem is that it's really not any better than it's cheaper brother in Buffalo Trace. Produced by the same distillery, this just doesn't add enough to warrant the jump.

5th February 2018

Great in every sense.

One of the best BOURBONS I've ever tried, the taste, palate, finish absolutely perfect in every way as far as my taste buds are concerned.

30th January 2018

Good, really good, great taste even, but not quite hearty.

Nice Bourbon! It's a little wimpy, but it's not objectionable. I usually have a dram of Whistlepig 10 year rye after a long day. I got this as a gift. It's nice, but I didn't have a bit of a "where's the beef" moment when the glass was emptied. Good flavors...just not quite enough for me.

I'm wondering if it's possible to not give 5 stars? Hmmm.....

Got one word...Blanton's!

23rd January 2018

Top drop

Not many bourbon have this many reviews here. The reason for that is the high quality drink you can purchase for under £40. Smooth as silk, nice long finish. Not as rough as Elijah, so depends what you are looking for. If you want a smooth sipper that doesn't blow your head off, you should give it a go. I prefer Blanton's, so ER takes the very best to beat it. If you like Woodford, Michters or Rebel Yell, you should try it.

21st January 2018

Two thumbs up...👍👍

As a single malt scotch drinker I wanted to break away and try some different whiskey. My brother in law brought this up from Tenn. and I’ve fully enjoyed it. Definitely a ‘sweeter’ and ‘flavorful’ tasting drink. I will purchase again and enjoy it as one of my favorite bourbons to sip. Love the flavors of each taste!

14th January 2018

Massively sweet, honeyed opening, lead onto a rich, thick, spicy taste. Velvety feel with a long, lightly oaked finish.

One of the best bourbons out there, especially at its price. A stunner.

Serve over the largest ice you have.

23rd December 2017

I hate it. Too thin and cloyingly sweet, even for a bourbon. This gets rave reviews from everyone else, and I've heard they have tremendous variation, so maybe I got a bad batch. Now I'm hesitant to try any other Buffalo Trace Distillery products.

20th October 2017

Excellent bourbon

27th August 2017

Smooth. Spicy and Manly

12th August 2017

Not a high-flier

I'm primarily a single-malt Scotch drinker but have tried out a few bourbons over the past few years. Eagle Rare is the latest. In short, it doesn't do much for me. People comment about how smooth it is, but I find it to be just plain bland. I much prefer Elijah Craig, even without the age statement. It's a touch sweeter and a has a lot more of what I'll call personality. It's definitely bigger and bolder than Eagle Rare, which I gather to be mostly for people who like to mix their spirits and admire fancy bottles. I like my whisky neat, and the Eagle doesn't fly with me. Too bad. I was hoping to find a viable alternative to my benchmark bourbon. I will keep looking.

11th August 2017

Not as good as it was......

I was a huge fan of Eagle Rare, my first bottle was a life changing moment. It really opened up my palette, and gave me a greater appreciation for Bourbon. However, since changing from hand bottling to machine it has lost its subtle flavours and an the overriding taste is now very herbiscous, like fresh cut grass. Gone is the subtle, sweet, lingering after taste. Gone is the cherry, oak and mild caramel taste. Such a shame and a real example of how increasing production can have a negative effect on a great product.

19th July 2017

Lovely Stuff from across the Atlantic

Excellent Bourbon release. Would highly recommend to Sherry Speyside fans. To me, it reminds me or a more mature version of Aberlour A'bunadh. Similar taste profile when diluted down to the mid forties.

It has a lovely short and satisfying finishing that just makes you want more.

Bravo Eagle Rare!

14th June 2017

Keep coming back!

Quite simply this is 10/10 for me! I have been sampling bourbons for a few years now and I keep coming back to this one. I even bought Jim Murrays best rye in the world and 2nd best whisky in the world 2016 (Pikesville 6 Year Old 110 Proof Straight Rye) and I still preferred the Eagle rare any day of the week. It’s just got the balance between the flavours perfect. The Pikesville is just not as smooth. Trying to recall what I have had, Woodford, Tin cup, Elijah Craig, Bulleit, Makers mark, Makers 46, Pikesville 6yr, Four roses and more. Eagle Rare wins for me, I just hope they keep producing this quality sipper.

27th December 2016

Top of the range

In its price range, as good as it gets.

6th July 2016

Short but still great stuff

This was my 2nd bourbon and in its defense it followed arguably the best bourbon I've had to date (Woodford Reserve) so I chose not to penalize it so much and to just take it for what it's worth. It's a solid bourbon. There are traces of citrus on the palate and bites like a tiger at first. It's in no way harsh though. Having bite isn't a negative. When it's accompanied by a short finish it can be, because once the bite loosens up and the finish lingers on, it really makes you want that 2nd sip. This had both; saber tooth bite and a short finish, which was sort of a bummer. It has arguably one of the coolest bottles (wine shaped) and graphics.

9th March 2016

Good taste for the price.

A very solid Bourbon, not as special as some single barrels, but very good none the less. For the price there is very little better.

25th February 2016

Superb Value

I was initially enticed by the bottle design. When I got home and poured my first glass over a single ice cube I was hooked. This is an excellent bourbon whose quality far exceeds the price paid. Slightly sweet with an nice hint of spice and oak. This is a great sipping bourbon. It would probably be good with a mixer, but I just couldn't do that. I prefer mine with a single ice cube or a small splash of water. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a quality sipping bourbon.

30th January 2016

Simply the best bang for your buck

Eagle Rare drinks far better than any other bourbon in the high $20/low $30 range, and even better than some of the more expensive bourbons. Flavors of oak, vanilla, and caramel dominate with a crisp and full bodied finish. Absolutely fantastic.

4th January 2016

Gordon Wright

From the first I was hooked. It was a Christmas gift in 2010 and repeated again this year. Far too long to wait.

28th December 2015

This Beer Blog:

On nosing the whisky is very sweet with notes of fudge and toffee jumping out of the glass straight of the bat. This is followed by notes of dry wood and cinnamon through the middle of the aroma. The nose is finished off by hints of cumin, sweet malt and banana.

On tasting there are again sweet notes of toffee, fudge and almond but this is balanced out hits of alcohol. Through the middle the softer spice notes become more prominent with hits of cinnamon and cardamom flooding the middle of the taste. The taste finishes with notes of wood, pine and a bitter almost herbal note.

The finish is long with a lingering sweetness and a soft alcoholic note.

Truly complex and fantastically well balanced this is an American whiskey worth looking out for!

8th September 2015

Very good

Have been a fan of Buffalo Trace for a while, but never tried this before.

First sniff gives you hints of caramel and mixed spice, almost like a Christmas pudding. It's really dry, with hints of orange and a very subtle hit of vanilla coming through.

It's smooth, but it's got an edge to it that gives it a kick.

Very happy with this.

14th August 2015

Incredibly rich, not too sweet but with an almost burnt caramel flavour. Absolutely marvelous drink.

13th August 2015

Absolutely Superb!

Never heard of this before but was recommended it by a bloke in the Whisky shop in Soho and it does not disappoint. I only ever drink bourbon neat and this is absolutely superb - just the right side of smooth but with incredibly complex flavours. You can savour a small amount or drink glass after glass and still come to it as though you were tasting it for the first time. Wonderful.

10th May 2015

This has been my favorite bourbon for the past couple months. Prefer 1 ice cube over a whisky stone as the melted ice opens up more of the sweet flavors in this particular drink. Definitely flavorful, and for the price (locally can get it for $28.99) you can't go wrong.

3rd March 2015

Changed Recipe...Lower Quality

This used to be one of the best bourbons on the market for the price. Complex, leather and toasted vanilla on the palate, real depth. Sometime in 2014 Buffalo Trace distillery changed the recipe and made this a small batch instead of a single barrel. This decreased the flavor depth and complexity by a long shot. Of course the price has stayed more or less the same and no indication of the change appears anywhere on the bottle. Bad form.

18th January 2015

Its called Eagle Rare for a reason

I had to go to three liquor stores before finding a bottle of Eagle Rare. I found the nose to be very sweet with hints of vanilla and fruit. The taste was similar to the nose being sweet with a smooth yet spicy finish. This was my favorite bourbon until I got midway through the bottle. I'm not sure if it was the bottle itself or the fact that I put it in the freezer for a couple days, but on New Years this bottle lost all its flavor and tasted like rubbing alcohol. This is certainly a bourbon worth trying, but I don't think I will risk buying another.

14th January 2015

I think that this has to be one of the best Bourbon's on the market - and to think that I can buy a bottle for under £40...well thats like Christmas everyday!

Buffalo Trace have really done themselves proud here - and yes, their Stagg line is their higher end signature batch, but the Stagg Jr for example has completely different tasting notes. Eagle Rare is rich and dry with lovely tasting notes which work well on its own, but equally good in an Old Fashioned with Orange and Orange Bitters. In fact, it is my Bourbon of choice for both an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan when I'm not using a heavy Rye.

Enjoy...and enjoy again!

5th November 2014

Lovely Stuff

I'm usually more of a scotch drinker but like to give anything a try. Ordered a sample of this and am not disappointed. Very smooth stuff.

I will definitly be ordering a bottle.

28th October 2014

Spectacular Bourbon!

I discovered this bourbon while touring the Buffalo Trace distillery. They distill a lot of great bourbons and this has become one of my favorites. It is smooth, but full of flavor. I drink it on a single ice cube and it is perfect! You won't be disappointed in this bourbon.

16th October 2014

Balanced and smooth

I drink it neat. A great whiskey doesn't need ice, or a mixer. It has an even, long finish, and a very balanced and smooth front note. It has quickly become my favorite.

15th April 2014

Right up to expectations

We don't have a lot of American whiskies sold here in Estonia, so when I saw this today in one of Tallinn's best liquor stores, I didn't think too long. Having tried all kinds of Scotch for about a year, I had longed for a good entry into bourbon world for quite a while. And I think this is as good an entry as it gets. At first it felt spicier than I had expected, but that was probably just my tongue getting used to it. The 2nd and 3rd sip were already perfectly balanced and now I'm on my 4th glass. Very smooth and easy to drink, yet you feel that it is special stuff. Nice long vanilla aftertaste. Definitely a good buy.

4th April 2014

Excellent Bourbon!

Smooth, smooth, smooth, and incredibly delicious, lots of Vanilla and caramel with smoke at the end, Angel light on the tongue, an absolutely beautiful sipping whiskey, one of my favourites

30th December 2013

Very good

Excellent and smooth. Got it for $20, will buy again.
