From the Dry Fly Distillers in Spokane, Washington comes a whiskey made using triticale, which is a hybrid of wheat and rye grains. Lots of ginger and dried fruits notes throughout this one, joined by vanilla and oak spice along the way - very interesting indeed! And no, triticale wasn't the grain featured in the Star Trek episode 'The Trouble with Tribbles'. That was quadrotriticale.
I enjoy a good rye whiskey now and then, but they can be overpowering for my palate (a fancy word for my whiskey taster). The Dry Fly Triticale (a hybrid grain created in Scotland in the late 1800s by crossing wheat with rye) creates an excellent whiskey that has the sharp rye notes, mellowed with the softer characteristics of wheat. Bottles of this are hard to come by unless you visit the distillery in Spokane at the right time. A fine whiskey. I'm looking forward to trying it in a Manhattan.
I have been trying various whiskies for years from Scottish single malts to Irish pot stills, Japanese and American. I have over 70 different spirits in my collection some of which are over 40 years old. This one blew my mind, smooth, superb taste, great palette and finish. And the price is exceptional. I have bottles that cost three times more yet this is one to be savoured and comes top of my list.
