    Compass Box The Peat Monster

A peaty blended malt created by the renowned John Glaser, of Compass Box. The Peat Monster contains malt whiskies from the legendary Isle of Islay, along with a helping of Highland malt in there too. The result is richly smoky, with underlying hints of fruit and oak. Also, the the monster on the label looks like it's seen something particularly scary, which begs the question: what's scary to a monster...?

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Peat, marked salinity, leans to Caol Ila in style, something medicinal. Sweet and fruity, grainy.

    Palate

Peat, oak. Botanicals, floral, coppery, sweet, smoky bacon, hint of papaya.

    Finish

A lingering sweetness, more peat, floral: roses and violets, sweet spice, oak.

It's Peat Monster, therefore it's peaty.

First, I think it's very disingenuous to give negative remarks and lesser stars because a whisky named "Peat Monster" tastes peaty. C'mon! I'm an Islay Whisky fan, therefore a peat fan. I typically prefer single malts, but Peat Monster delivers what I like most about Islays. So, if you like Islays, and/or you like peat, I think you'll like this. In addition, it's a great deal at about $50 a bottle. A couple of teaspoons of water in a Glencairn glass with your whisky and its a pleasant evening closer.

    A nice surprise

Nose: Oily leather right off, citrus- something like lemon zest, rubbing alcohol. Palate: Maple-wood-like sweetness, oak leaves, corn. Finish: Long, toasty finish. Buttered corn, subtle peat. The zestiness emerged more with a few drops of water. Not at all the peat bruiser I was expecting, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Great Value for those that actually appreciate Peated

Great value even though its a blend, and to the reviewer saying the colour was off?! That's because its non chill filtered and no colour added - it may be time to research basic Scotch Whisky terms. The amount of reviews done on peated stuff by non-peated fans makes no sense. Amazing nose, body, mouth feel and finish makes this a great addition to any cabinet, and even though NAS it's amazing!

    Complex and brutal!

Tasting notes are pretty spot on in my experience, drinking some as I type this out. Brown Sugar to Band-Aids to Bacon that finishes with a sweet fruity note. Complex and brutal, this is a great break from the norm and an excellent blended malt!

    Very good. Worth a try.

This whisky deserves at least four stars. I've had a lot of Bourbon and single malt Scotch, and this can stand up with some of the best drinks I've had in my opinion. It's super drinkable, consistent and beyond tasty. Great balance if you enjoy peat, and certainly no monster. I suspect "Peat Princess" is a bit less marketable. Cheers!
