Cardhu is the latest Diageo distillery to have a little core range shake up with the launch of a no age statement single malt (or two). Created using hand-picked toasted oak casks, Cardhu Gold Reserve offers something different to the classic 12 year old with a fruitier nose and a dry, warming palate.
Nose: Honeyed tinned stone fruits, toffees and a hint of strawberry with red apple and ginger coming through with a little water.
Palate: Fairly dry with biscuity oak and a little cinnamon as well as some development of those toffee and apple notes.
Finish: Gentle oak and (milk chocolate) caramel digestives.
Overall: Described as a "generous" whisky, it's a description that matches both the nose and its general easy-drinking nature.

My now favourite grandson treated me to this delightful whisky which I am enjoying in 2017.

Lovely and smooth, easy to drink. A new favorite of Myself the Wife and the Father in law. Although my Dad hates it, loves his Talisker and Penderyn. Will keep going back to this one time and time again.

Superb. A bargain at £35 a steal at £25. Every little helps. Until 2.1.2017. Fill your boots!

bought a bottle because it was on offer, don't think I would like to have payed full price,a pleasant enough dram but nothing to write home about, had to work hard to get flavour on pallet.won't let it go to waste, after all I am Scottish.

On being offered one at a mate's place, I approached it with the kindly, fake enthusiasm of someone trying not to betray the fact that he secretly thought he could find a more interesting malt, blindfolded, on a Somerset farm. In the monstrous, theatrical pomposity of the bad loser, I can only assume he was leaning heavily on beginner's luck but nonetheless, I'll be claiming this as my discovery in a quite short time.Blinding.I discovered it, you know.

Firstly, this is a very pleasant dram - very smooth and a lovely finish. I enjoyed a couple last evening and I shall enjoy bringing the bottle out again for myself or friends. That said, though, when I compare it to what I could have bought for the same price or less - various 15 or 16 year old Speysides or nonchillfiltered 48% or cask strength whiskies - then I would have to consider this NAS 40% Cardhu as poorer value. It is a good whisky, nonetheless, so you'll just have to make your own mind up.
