This unpeated single malt from Caol Ila was released as part of Diageo's 2015 batch of Special Releases – the tenth in the series. Distilled in 1997 and matured for 17 years before it was bottled at cask strength.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Toffees. It really does smell just like toffees. Allspice, lots of brown sugar, a touch of anise, Cinnamon Grahams and even a hint of chilli.
Tangy toffee now, a little chalk and increasingly charred oak spice, charred oak and, yep, definitely some smoke in there...

The smokiest unpeated release for many years, with plenty of bourbon cask character.
Wow! This is a delicious dram! Sweet, spicy -- reminds me of chai spice and speculoos. A bit hot on the tongue due to the high strength. Unlike most Islays, this one can take a bit of water. Barley sugar and toffee on the undiluted palate. Long, luxurious finish with the barest hint of smoke.
For me is the one!
Peated Caol Ila is good, but the unpeated version is in a different league imo. They should more of this, it certainly doesn't turn people off like the peaty version sometimes does.
This is simply outstanding, and a bargain at the price.
