Bunnahabhain
Single Malt
This is one of two fine releases from Islay distillery Bunnahabain to mark Fèis Ìle 2024. The other, Bunnahabhain 23 Year Old Triple Sherry Wood Finish is a celebration of the distillery's unpeated, sherried style, but this edition is more of a twist.
This 14 Year Old Scotch whisky was originally filled into bourbon casks on 26 May 2009 before being transferred into ruby Port hogsheads on 17 November 2020 to finish. It was bottled in 2024 at 58.7% ABV.
The initial burst of dark chocolate fades to reveal toasted oak, cherries, plums and raspberries, with a hint of caramelised walnuts.
Spicy yet sweet, with cinnamon and nutmeg intertwined with pain au chocolat, redcurrants, pomegranate and sweet malt.
Lingering finish with cocoa and spice.
A very difficult one to drink. It's all cask and no Bunna. Even 6 months later with lots of air in the bottle this had still not eased. If you like huge punchy malts then go for it. Not at all subtle.
This whisky from Bunnahabhain is in my top ten tipple chart worth every penny a fantastic dram.
The different maturation cask has made a slightly different, yet still delicious, beast to the ones usually produced by bunna. Chocolatey, yet still fruity and with a rich, deep finish that lingers on the tongue. A great whisky from one of the most consistent distilleries out.
