Benromach Peat Smoke 2014

The powerful forces of smoke and sherry come together in this 2014 vintage Speyside single malt Scotch whisky from Benromach Distillery. The barley for this one was peated to 57ppm and then matured in first-fill oak casks for eight years, with time spent finishing in first-fill sherry hogsheads until it was bottled up in 2023.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Blackcurrant compote, orange peel, toasted heather, and ginger.

Palate Creamy vanilla, bramble berries, peat smoke, and nutmeg.

Finish Long and spicy with woodsmoke underneath.

Not their best
The first iteration of the peaty sherried malt was delicious. I snapped this up when it came out but was very disappointed. The first fill oak casks have given this malt an overwhelming oak flavour which masks some of the sherry and peat. As a result it is incredibly woody and spicy. I hope the next release is closer the the original bottling which was 10/10.
