Balvenie Peat Week 2002 Bottling Note

One of the first expressions from the classic Speyside distillery made from 100% peated barley, The Balvenie Peat Week 14 Year Old is the result of a series of trials carried out by clever duo David Stewart MBE, Balvenie malt master, and Ian Millar, prestige whiskies specialist.

For just one week a year since 2002, The Balvenie team has been quietly producing the smoky stuff, and the liquid destined for this batch has been fully matured in American oak casks. The Speyside stalwart as you've never tasted it before!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Floral, tropical fruit notes with almonds and honey – and then the peat smoke comes through.

Palate: Citrus-led vanilla, peach and honey, and a gentle, almost floral peat smoke – very different to the Islay stuff.

Finish: Long and soft, with a lingering creaminess.

Overall: The unmistakable Speyside-honey character balances well with the gentle peat influence. The Balvenie reinvented – but not completely.

Balvenie Peat Week Aged 14 Year Old - 2002 Vintage Reviews

Not for me

I like peaty Scotches but this missed the mark.

Confused dram

- finally purchased a bottle and was not very impressed. A slightly smoky layer cake that was extremely oaky at times and then filled with muddled sweetness. I would try a sample first.

Worth a try.

Not my usual being a doublewood / edradour type of guy but wow! The extra complexity coupled with typical balvenie smoothness. Different but not unwelcome.

Look elsewhere

Waited a minute to sample this and I oh so wanted it to be an awesome find like Old Ballantruan or Connemara...but it wasn't. What peat the Balvenie had was unbalanced.

Worth a try if you like peated scotch.

It's easy to drink. Decent palate. Finish is slightly better. Nothing I would reach for if I had a choice.

tried and trusted but just a bit dull

Like most of the Balvenie range Peat week is very accessible, although perhaps not to those who don't like Peat! The formula is classic for a mildly peated malt and as a result its not really challenging in any new or particularly interesting way. It's pleasant gentle soft and creamy but Balvenie remains a safe choice that definitely has its place but perhaps not those who like to challenge their palate or nose with something new and interesting. Disappointing as a result, especially at this price

My new favorite peated Scotch

Unusually great balance of peat and oak. Amazing whisky.
