A very interesting single malt American whisky from Texas, this was distilled at Balcones and was "yard-aged" in ex-bourbon American oak before bottling. Expect huge flavours from this one...
Freshly baked banana bread with undertones of honey and vanilla and just the faintest hint of cedar wood at the back. Suggestions of roasted chestnuts and heavy cream.
Ester-y with apple and orchard fruits. Brown sugar makes an appearance and transforms into molasses.
Warm, woody spices and some breadiness, but not necessarily maltiness, completes this luscious single malt.
I am no expert when it comes to whiskey, but I tried a fair amount of Balcones' when I toured their distillery in Waco, TX. This was so good, I bought two bottles on the way out (for $60 each! There was a limit of only 2). I will be visiting again soon - as soon as I run out.
This was with some water to bring the alcohol burn down. Drinking straight, I noted burnt brown sugar tones, perhaps molasses, & notes of vanilla, but the alcohol burn overshadowed & overtook the whisky. Not a favorite.
The magic is there, but it may well have come from Chip Tate as President and distiller. He has left Balcones and the secrets of the art may well have gone with him. Let's hope not, and enjoy if you can!
Received this as a gift in a sample set. The Master of Malt tasting notes are spot on, and this was a pleasantly easy drinkin' whisky from my great home state of Texas. The nose and palate were quite delightful. However, I found the finish to be a bit heavy on the woody spices. The breadiness (which I find best resembled bread crust) is all too quickly lost in a warm wash of campfire ash. I'd recommend pairing this with dry-rubbed BBQ and salted baked potato!
We had this on a whisky tasting, theme "World whiskies awards 2014". It was rated second best. Most people liked it very much. "A really good example of a X-mas whisky" was one of the reviews.
