Balcones Single Malt Bottling Note

A very interesting single malt American whisky from Texas, this was distilled at Balcones and was "yard-aged" in ex-bourbon American oak before bottling. Expect huge flavours from this one...

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Freshly baked banana bread with undertones of honey and vanilla and just the faintest hint of cedar wood at the back. Suggestions of roasted chestnuts and heavy cream.

Palate: Ester-y with apple and orchard fruits. Brown sugar makes an appearance and transforms into molasses.

Finish: Warm, woody spices and some breadiness, but not necessarily maltiness, completes this luscious single malt.

Balcones Texas Single Malt Reviews

Undrinkable acetone

Was really looking forward to this one after how hyped this distillery is by the Whiskey Tribe. Found this one to be laden with notes of acetone. Undrinkable in my opinion. Just about broke my heart to pour about the entire bottle down the drain. If it was just not my cup of tea I wouldn’t have left a review.

Simply astounding

This Single malt is like nothing you've ever had before. I've been drinking whisky for nearly 30 years and nothing comes close to this. I'm a huge fan of Glengoyne and their 21 year old, but this Balcones Single malt beats it for me. Mainly because of the remarkable flavour they get into it in only 3 years. If you've never had an amercian whisky before start with this one. Balcones will take the world of whisky by storm.

Very Nice

I am a scotch collector (240 open bottles) and so I always look for something new and interesting. I finally found this bottle at a local liquor store for $75. I just opened the bottle, poured a dram into my Glencairn glass and let it breath for a few minutes. The nose is of a barrel strength bourbon, but the taste is definitely of a scotch (it is 100% barley). It tasted like a mix of Jura, Highland Park 18, and a Macallan which is very strange since this is less than 2 years old. I am very impressed.

Excellent American Single Malt

Worth the hype. This baby packs a lot of power and needs time to open up, but this is an outstanding representation of an American Single Malt. It's unique, perhaps not for everyone, but this whiskey snob is more than satisfied.

Balcones Texas Single Malt

beyond my expectation

knew about the hype and about Tate's demise..
looked for something that was barreled in 2015.. found one and amazed..
solid flavor and noticeable smoothness.. felt a bit of bourbon and a tiny bit spicy..

My favorite ..

Yes , I said it after drinking Mac10,12,18 and many more others.. Can't wait until Chip starts his own shop again..

Great Taste.

A strong whiskey just served on the rocks which doesn't blow your head off, great on the palate and a smooth finish, even my wife like it straight up.

Egad. The flavour that's packed into this is simply unreal. Watch out Scotland.

13th January 2016

my favorite..

not sure if post-Tate products will be as good.. i'm stocking up the ones that he made (pre-2015).. they are just so good.. amazing combination of flavor and balance and creaminess..

Not one of the traditional glens you can get from Scotland. No heavy woody taste but great with buttery flavors almost butterscotch, and a really good finish. Probably the best single malt whiskey I have ever tasted. Chip Tate is a genius.

To the User Below me...

It's more like a bourbon than a scotch. But really more than that, it tastes like a good ole' Texas Whiskey :)

Best Whiskey They Have

I am no expert when it comes to whiskey, but I tried a fair amount of Balcones' when I toured their distillery in Waco, TX. This was so good, I bought two bottles on the way out (for $60 each! There was a limit of only 2). I will be visiting again soon - as soon as I run out.

Very smokey, strong finish of oak.

This was with some water to bring the alcohol burn down. Drinking straight, I noted burnt brown sugar tones, perhaps molasses, & notes of vanilla, but the alcohol burn overshadowed & overtook the whisky. Not a favorite.

Wonderful but fleeting?

The magic is there, but it may well have come from Chip Tate as President and distiller. He has left Balcones and the secrets of the art may well have gone with him. Let's hope not, and enjoy if you can!

Taste of Texas

Received this as a gift in a sample set. The Master of Malt tasting notes are spot on, and this was a pleasantly easy drinkin' whisky from my great home state of Texas. The nose and palate were quite delightful. However, I found the finish to be a bit heavy on the woody spices. The breadiness (which I find best resembled bread crust) is all too quickly lost in a warm wash of campfire ash. I'd recommend pairing this with dry-rubbed BBQ and salted baked potato!

X-mas whisky

We had this on a whisky tasting, theme "World whiskies awards 2014". It was rated second best. Most people liked it very much. "A really good example of a X-mas whisky" was one of the reviews.

Well worth the trouble

Thank you! I live on Texas, I can not purchase Balcones whisky here on Texas. In one large chain store I was told you could not purchase Balcones products unless you were a personal friend of the owner. Reordering now. Thanks again !!

"My Bad"

We discovered this in San Antonio. Was able to purchase a bottle. At our Christmas open house, I brought out the bottle to serve it to only one guest. I got distracted and at the end of the party it was all gone. Guests were mixing it with coke!!!! My husband has since forgiven me!

A really nice surprise!

Wasn't expecting this whisky to be this good...! Very rich, caramel, deep toffee nose and a big punchy flavour. Similar to a Jura in my opinion, very impressed!

A new favorite!

This is the best American whisky I've ever tasted!
