A 1991 vintage single malt from Balblair, replacing their 1990 Second Release. The 1991 Third Release was drawn from a combination of bourbon casks and sherry butts, resulting in a balanced flavour profile of caramel, cherry, almond and buttery pastry.
Orange chocolate brownie, sultanas, stem ginger, strawberry bon-bons.
Crunchy brown sugar, honeycomb ice-cream, walnut loaf and apple turnover.
Long and rich with runny caramel sweetness.
I've tasted this a few times and I should declare I am a huge Balblair vintage fan. [Boo to the new non-vintage series and price hikes!]. The nose has apple skins and cinnamon sprinked on flan. While soft, it is not smooth=boring, but is rather balanced between some light, custardy desserts, citrus centered at orange but maybe pomelo hinted. Almost no spice on the nose. On the palate, the spice appears, a tad of white pepper, but lots of gorgeous fruit, and some honeyed sweetness. The fruit has citrus but includes white and red fruits, in a very well balanced mix. Tangerine with a hint of raspberrry, mayhap, and a dash of cardommom and a spoon full or marmalade. The finish shows off the sherry cask and the oak, with a tad of coffee, some drying but weak coconut, and more nutmeg on the finish. The death harkens the white pepper again. Quite glorious and a world-class balance of flavors.
Loved the 1990 and this is indeed a worthy replacement. 5 stars all day long
