The relaunch of Balblair's core range in early 2019 saw the distillery say "So long!" to vintages and "Hello there!" to age statements. This particular expression is the Balblair 15 Year Old, which is initially matured in ex-bourbon casks before being moved over to first-fill Spanish oak butts. A deeper concentration of fruit notes compared to the 12 Year Old, and joined by some yummy chocolatey elements too.
Honey-covered apple, citrus freshness, coffee and walnut cake.
Dried fruit and more apple, dark chocolate shavings, ginger.
Curaçao orange, dried oak, caramelised dates.
I found this to very complex but suttle. Maybe a little fruitcake and spice. And i put at the top of my favorites.
Recently ordered the Balblair 15 alongwith a small 3cl sample bottle. Haven't opened the big bottle yet, but if the sample is anything to go by, I'm in for a treat. I am torn to recommend it too highly because there may not be enough left in stocks for me to buy again in future! Beautiful combination of smells and flavours which excite the senses & palate. A very well crafted, quality Scotch single malt whisky.
Tried this for the first time last evening and really enjoyed everything about it: the colour was good, the nose inviting and the flavour delicious. I was a bit concerned that a couple of the reviews had complained about the finish but I must say that I didn't find a problem at all. So much did I enjoy this dram that I've just ordered another bottle.
A great whisky. Truly a classic
I’ve been reserving judgment on this whisky for some months in the hope that my initial reaction which was not positive might mellow after a few drams. It has to a degree but when compared to my other malts it’s in the relegation zone. The main problem is the unpleasant aftertaste which another person has all ready pointed out. I get a rough spirit feel no smoothness. Nor do I get the mellowness touted for this whisky. It smells indistinct and I wonder if the whisky has suffered from being stored initially in a cold outhouse. It is reasonably priced and a little perseverance brings some rewards.
