Aberlour Casg Annamh #1 Bottling Note

The first release in Aberlour's Casg Annamh series! This expression (named after the Gaelic for "rare cask") is matured in a trio of cask types, including European oak sherry casks and two sorts of American oak cask. Presented in similar livery to their very popular A'Bunadh expression, and with a sherry-dominated flavour profile too, we expect big things from Casg Annamh!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Milky coffee, flame raisins and plenty of honeyed malt.

Palate: Golden Grahams, nectarines, cinnamon and strawberry jam.

Finish: Cooking spices, sugary biscuits and red apples.

Aberlour Casg Annamh Batch 1 Reviews

Vastly better than A'Bunadh

Absolutely fantastic. Smells like a sherry bomb, and tastes like a sherry bomb, yet doesn't rely on a high ABV to carry the flavour (A'bunadh relies on being cask strength, as without the high ABV it is nothing special).

Absolutely terrible. Smells like old ladies' perfume and tastes like prison hooch/poorly made moonshine. 1 star rating because it at least seems to contain ethanol.

Can’t escape bitter edge to the finish

I’m a fan of aberlour and this could be a great dram. For me the nose has got sherry, saltanas and banana (from the bourbon casks). The delivery has got the sherry and spices one would expect. However on second bottle (bought a few last summer) and I can’t overlook the bitter note on the finish - goes beyond a touch of wood. Hopefully the next batch will be an improvement.

Subtle yet complex

Abunadh without the Bomb! Such a quality dram this is. Strong yet subtle sherry notes, not overpowering.
Complex yet simple, hard to explain, just go get some and enjoy.

Well worth a try!

Honest? is a bit complex...but i have to admit is the best Aberlour whisky i tasted since A'Bunadh 47 and 52! Really complex aroma and pallete - opens up 'darker' with HIGHLAND water...sweeter straight up...deffo one to watch for future batches!

Dashed Hopes

Not worthy of Aberlour. Hoping there won't be a batch 2.

Great dram

Really a great dram, and great value.
Nose: Vanilla, malty honey and spice.
Palate: Oak spice. Sweet candied floral notes, fruity caramel. Sweet citrus.
Finish: Pleasant, long, sweet and spicy.

Oh dear.

Rather disappointed by this! Expected the usual delicious sherry content with a twist, and was instead underwhelmed by spice and citrus. I thought perhaps I'd been over-critical, but the few friends who've tried it all agree, that it's merely okay, but not much more than that.

Superb Whisky

If elegant could be used to describe a whisky, the Casg Annamh has earned it. So much flavor, and it gets better after the first dram. Sweet rum cask on nose, vanilla frosting.
More sweet vanilla, raisins on palate.
Medium long finish, cereal notes, vanilla bean.
After a few drops of water, more pronounced vanilla, oily mouthfeel, cereal.

Will this be an investment I wonder

Agreed with the others that this is a fantastic whisky.

Really outstanding sherried whisky. Agree with one of the other reviews that the sherry presence isn’t overwhelming and let’s other spicy notes shine through.

Nicer than A'bunadh

Enjoyed this more than A'bunadh. Whereas A'bunadh is a whisky disguised by sherry, Casg Annamh is a whisky featuring sherry without covering up the other flavours within. That familiar christmas cake and plum pudding comes through, alongside the oakiness of the European casks. This presents some great spices on the finish (almost like Compass Box Spice Tree), something A'bunadh only achieves through a high ABV. Definitely recommended.

A xonderful discovery

Delightfully long on the palate with plenty of sherry tones coming through. This was a delight to discover and a keeper for my collection.
