It's That Boutique-y Rye Company's very first bottling of Empire Rye, released for its Rye Series! Back in 2015, a group of New York State distillers created a consortium to to establish a whiskey style for the state they call their home. The result is Empire rye, an homage to New York's pre-Prohibition rye history and testament to the skills of its modern distillers. This particular expression is a blended Empire rye spirit, made with Empire rye from 9 different distillers in New York, all brought together to show off what the style and state has to offer!
Batch 1 is a release of 685 bottles.
‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ bottles single malts, single grains and bourbons from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blended malts and blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.
Honeyed sweetness, balanced by hints of baked earth spiciness and a kick of cumin.
Soft and creamy with vanilla pod and buttered bread. Soon more cumin and a kick of peppercorn follows.
Touches of red liquorice and toasted spice.

Great idea and still enjoyable but missing a bit of intensity on the palate. Perhaps not as complex as some rye’s (eg Wilderness).
This first batch is clear and present rye at first as is the ABV, not to worry though as in the second whiffs herbs/spice, honey, stone fruits, berries, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar and bready scents show up. More emphasis entering the palate on wood, spice, sweetness and ABV in the first sip. Evolving to a number of layers that mingle in graininess, fruits, kitchen & baking spices, … A short to medium finish, the wood and spice focus continues on top of drying rye hints.
