Balcones Texas Rye Bottling Note

Released in celebration of the distillery's 10th anniversary, this expression from Balcones is made from 100% rye, with the mashbill containing 80% raw elbon grain from north and northwest Texas as well as crystal, chocolate, and roasted rye varieties. It's allowed to age in new charred American oak barrels and bottled at 100 proof. A wonderfully chocolatey rye.

Balcones Texas Rye 100 Proof Reviews

Great Whiskey

Very tasty and definitely a good sipping whiskey. Goes well with bbq meat.Exceptional quality and fantastic flavour. Perfect rye and taste much better than modern Scotch or trendy bourbons.
What a feeling!

Showcases how much different types of Rye can influence flavour much more unlike other types of grain.

One of the most unique Ryes out there, but only for experienced Rye drinkers who want to broaden their horizons. Uses lots of different types of Rye and different Rye grains have very different flavour profile. This comes through into this whiskey which reminds me of Rye bread/chocolate and has a very long aftertaste. The flavours of this whiskey are mostly because of the base Rye grains used and less down to the barrel influence because it is aged under two years. Not for the faint hearted whose experiences of 100% Ryes is only the often rebranded and imitated MGP 95/5 style which is used everywhere.

I Love Balcones with a Capital L but this is trash

Balcones makes some of the best of the best of the best whiskeys.

But their Rye is absolutely garbage.

It's weird, how can a distillery that makes so many incredible whiskeys, make a rye that tastes this terrible.

It Taste like grilled yellow peppers. And not in a nice way. It tastes rotten.

Now here's the good... EVERYTHING else that Balcones makes is pure gold. Try the Single Malts or the Brimstone. You will Love them. Guaranteed.

Pass on this one.

Chocolate!

I'm trying a few ryes and this is one of my first. LOVING this - it's very chocolatey with some chili spice. Quite a bit of butterscotch. I would buy this after trying this sample.

One of the best rye whiskies I’ve had.

I’ve only recently started delving into the Rye Whiskey (the Scots own the word Whisky so it’s spelt whiskey anywhere else) and I’ve had 2 or 3 bottles not including this one after buying a “drinks by the dram” sample a few years back and I don’t know why but I tend to go for the darker colour rye whiskeys. Don’t know if it’s due to my inexperience with rye but the deeper the hue the more flavour it has. Not so with single malt especially with Indian whiskey like Paul John. It’s probably because they didn’t use a refill cask so the flavour is more intense. I’m not keen on bourbon which rye is a part of but on its own it’s a really complicated whiskey that is sweet and bread dough like flavour especially from Balcones which is what there famous for. I like every expression Bkacknes so apart from the bourbon. Also there single malt is lovely on its own but in a cocktail man o man your in for a treat. What’s great about Balcones is there specials if your fast enough to get one which I’m never seem to get. I’ve had 2 but this rye is something different and if your wanting to do some exploring then buy a sample if you like it get a bottle why you can because this is the first time I’ve came across a rye from Balcones. Well worth it and it’s a complex whiskey that you can hone your senses on.
