A firm favourite here at the Master of Malt, this is a truly superb Guatemalan rum, blended using the solera system. Sublime stuff. This was matured in a mix of bourbon and sherry casks. The Beverage Testing Institute awarded this 98 points!
Nose: Very sweet and nutty, honey and chocolate. Dark brown sugar, gentle smoke. Pipe tobacco.
Palate: Very sweet and soft. Dark brown sugar, molasses, rounded, so gentle!
Finish: Thick, medium length, hint of smoke on the tail.

First of all don't misunderstand it is not trying to claim that its a 23yr old rum, its a play on a play, the minimum age of a rum in the bottle is 6 years and goes all the way up to 23. Also the rum is aged 2300ft above sea level hence the name. Apart from that the rum is great by itself or on ice. I recoment a dash of organge bitters and orange slice.Enjoy

Discovered this on a trip to Belize and then found locally. A little on the sweet side, but great just to pour a couple oz over a little ice or with a splash of Coke. I never really liked rum before and some of the so called rum you get in Central America the locals pour into coconuts doesn't help, but glad I ran across this. I've gradually learned that when you travel, ask around at the decent places and you discover gems every now and then.

Nice but not a patch on El Dorado 12 you do the math!

A year and a half ago the Mrs and I visited Dominican Republic and I tried some real Rum (previous rum encounters were Bacardi and coke). I've been a whisky drinker for a while now and decided to try this based on the reviews. It is an amazing rum. Fantastic nose, sweet but complex on the palate and it is incredibly smooth. There is none of that alcoholic burn you can get with cheap rums or young spirits. Delighted with the purchase and very much looking forward to having some friends around and sipping it neat. Highly recommend!

As good as this rum is (and it's really good), it's not 23 years old. The 23 anos was discontinued and replaced with a 23 Sistema Solera, whereby the oldest rum in the solera is 23 year old - and of that there isn't much. It's not even an average age.

poured into a stemless oversized wine glassnose: red hots (cinnamon)and generic cola (in a good way); sweet but nothing suggesting cloyingnesspalate: this is rum? not sure where everyone rating this negatively are getting the 'liqueur' sense...the mouthfeel isn't thin but this sure isn't 'thick' or syrupy. molasses, sure, but in a refined sense (of taste...not viscosity); other notes include raw honey bite, more 'cola' (again, in a good way), and, of course, there's the oak bite that's very mellowed but assertive nonetheless. i've heard as it sits and warms up, more develops, but this is right out of the bottle within a 5 minute span.finish: despite the impressiveness of the first two phases of the tasting (and worth, so far, the $50 price tag!), this is a finish i wish i could get from some of my favorite whisk(e)y experiences! the finish is of medium length, but the first 5 seconds are intense...there's a brief expansion and intensity of the above notes which continue to repeat with each sip/swallow...warming, tingly, small bite of woodiness, again a sort of distilled cola note (very nice actually)...will have to try the single ice cube later...as suggested. but neat, this is crisp and balmy. this isn't a beachside rum, but sure could make some time in the sand and sun better. i prefer mountains in the winter. this will be just fine in our northern mid-atlantic winters ;) cheers

Normally drink high quality scotch, but have known to dabble in rums. We had a party over the weekend. A friend brought this over to sample. I was very impressed. very smooth, very smokey goodness, even after 18 year old scotch. I will be looking to pick up a bottle. I don't believe you'll be disappointed.

I was really looking forward to this rum as a change from whisky. But while it has a decent nose and palate, I found the body to be extremely thin and water-like. Also, it was ridiculously alcoholic, almost as much as cheap vodka. I've tasted un-aged liquors at much higher proof which were less alcoholic. I certainly won't be buying again.

I'm going to be keeping my eye on this one as I belive it is going to start to pick up awards. If you like Demerara rums then El Dorado 21 is the obvious choice and if you like molasses rums then with out any doubt at all Ron Zacapa is your rum. I'm almost certain if the Pirates of the carribiean star Cpt Jack Sparrow got his hands on this stuff then Disiney would have a very hard time trying to make the films indeed as he would never be sober. Rum at its very best ! 😉

I have tried many 20+ y.o. rums and this is my standard. I always happily return to this sublime rum. It has converted several brandy and single-malt aficionados to enjoying the smooth and flavourful depths it offers. Amazing stuff!!

I love rum's but only dark rum and this is a rum that sets standards exstreamly high indeed. This has to be one of the best rums in the world and is dangerous in the sense of it been so nice you want more and you end up very drunk indeed. The amalgam of flavours is truly exceptional from the first sip to the very last it is a sensory over load and I highly recommend you all try this as this is at the pinnacle of dark rum's and the years of labour of love put into this tipple shows in the taste !.

To start, rum is my favourite tipple. However, in South Africa we have very few rum choices (lot's of good brandy though). So the choices thus far is Capt Morgan (dark) and some Havana rum. So I tend to drink the Captain because I have a sweet toothe. This saturday I saw the Ron Zacapa 23 and altough it was 3 times more expensive, I bought it. It was brilliant, smooth and the best Rum i have tasted, it was really an enjoyable sip and well recommended.

Went to buy a bottle at a Virginia ABC store after trying some in Vegas. $50 a pop here. The other reviews speak for themselves. However, I opted for the Zaya Gran Reserva for $35. it is an excellent alternative and just as good, maybe better. if you try it you won't be disappointed.

If you can name me one single rum on this website that is cheaper and better, I'll be INCREDIBLY surprised. What is there that's better at ANY price point?? I prefer this to the XO because of it's extra "bite". Anyone saying this rum is overpriced is perhaps a little deluded, given the lengths that the producers go to in order to make this stuff...This is an incredible, complex and yet perfectly accessible spirit. From the most hardened and cynical spirit buff, to the least experienced weekend drinker, this product scream quality, from the first sniff to the end of the lingering finish.Oh, and an Old Fashioned with this is the finest drink known to man. Unbelievable. As always, a few people always want to knock the one at the top of the pile!

A nice rum with some great flavours just think the price is a bit steep for what you get. Better rums on this website for cheaper, price and taste.

I tasted a sampler at a bar, and dreamed of this for 4 months before ordering a bottle. It's worth sitting down and taking quietly, so tell your friends to pipe down and listen to the flavour.

Better than the XO... This is a great one!!

The best rum ever tasted. Spicy, pleasuring and tropical. After tasting, enjoyable with vanilla cigars, choclate dipped cherries and banana slices are good partners. Angelic taste out of heaven.

Incomparable to any other Rum out there. It's all about the depth of taste and no other Rum tastes like this. Deep, mellow, smooth and slightly sweet; to be sipped neat with absolutely no mixer and best with no ice or water. To be savoured and enjoyed - like all the best things in life!

Copper-tinged gold. Sweet, spicy nose. Caramel and fruit taste. Spicy, slightly fiery. Honey-cocoa-coconut finish. This is excellent stuff, and much more to my taste than the more expensive XO.

Absolutely fabulous rum, so smooth. 3 times the price of a bottle of bacardi but 10-15 times better! If you are looking to get in to rum a great bottle at a reasonable price for the quality.Master of Malt, quick to communicate and dispatch which makes a real positive experience buying online.
