Pusser's Gunpowder Proof Bottling Note

Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' Black Label (previously known as Blue Label) is a higher proof traditional British Naval rum, produced using the blending recipe from the Admiralty. Well loved, it picked up a Trophy at the International Spirits Challenge 2016.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

The nose is full of dried fruits, dates, prunes, slightly overripe figs. The palate is very sweet, plenty of dark, syrupy, stewed fruits. An interesting pot still character with a pleasant muddiness. Full-bodied. The finish is incredibly long and dark.

Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' Black Label Reviews

Second best budget high-proof rum in the world.

Nr. 1 is Smiths & Cross Traditional Jamaican Rum, but this is almost as good. No need for water. It's perfectly balanced. Just enjoy it in it's undiluted glory.

3rd November 2020

Still good

Still have the occasional tot with water 2and one

2nd November 2020

A Good Palette tickling pleasure.

Definitely we’ll worth a taste. I was introduced to it by an old 2nd World War Submariner and U Boat hunter.

14th September 2020

A*** best served when alone - too good to share.

This was served in copious amounts at my cousins funeral. He was ex HM Subs man. I drank this all night and didn’t have any hint of a hangover the next day. This was alcohol made to perfection.. Best served when you are on your own for the evening / night. Far too nice to share

4th September 2020

Only regret the bottle when it is empty.

You can’t go wrong with Pusser’s, especially the Gunpowder Proof. I could force it down if I have to. No seriously it is a great rum. If you haven’t tried it do yourself a favour and buy buy buy you will not regret it. Actually you will regret it when it runs out so buy two bottles, when you have finished one order another.

Review score 5*

Fantastic rum, so much depth and rich flavour, the higher proof just makes it even better, intensifying the flavours... #1 on my list now

1st August 2020

Beautiful smooth sweet dark rum

Honestly the best rum I've ever tried, and I drink a lot of them. It is far too easy to drink - the bottle didn't even last a week. Unbelievably smooth. Smells of dried fruit and xmas pudding. Tastes like heaven.

Ok firstly I'm no navyman or specialist in any forces but thankyou to the men and women who are and have been keeping me and my family and yours safe throughout turbulent times throughout recent history but back to the rum. Read the reviews and always edged towards the wonderful plantations as preference but i thought I'd see what all the fuss is about.... Well the hype is real this is a proper British navy rum I must say, the instant you pop the Cork and take a sniff you know it's the business, on my second of the night neat of course the way God intended and I must say dark and deceptive stuff. Absolutely buy it you will not regret!

Impressive Navy Rum.

This has to be my 2nd contender for the best quality for money rum, with Smiths & Cross as the 1st. I never tasted such a smooth over-proof rum before. Very complex. The notes of treacle is heavenly. Very deep, dark notes and long aftertaste. We're in Caroni territory for a 5th of the money.

6th June 2020

The best tot I've tried.

Received mine last week. A fabulous rum sipped neat. So smooth . I'll be back for more,or might try the anniversary edition for a change. Highly recommended.

16th May 2020

Excellent Rum

Lovely taste that reminds me of dark sugar and toffee. Excellent on its own or with a mixer.

8th May 2020

hard to beat

I'm getting more into rum lately as the whisky producers seem to be riding too high on the cost wave these days blatantly exploiting the current popularity, and have to say that this rum is hard to beat if like me you prefer your tipples on the darker, sweeter more sherried side. I only drink spirits as god intended - neat or with a tad of water, and even at 54% this is well managable, with the higher ABV enhancing the flavour. It has everything a rum lover desires.

21st February 2020

Burnt sugar - try it with warm water for a rum toddy...

I'm a huge fan of Woods, but on seeing the fierce debate on here about which of these Navy Dreadnoughts is best I had to try Pusser's Gunpowder proof. Both are easily sinkable, especially on a cold Winter's night with the wind howling outside. Flavour wise, and on the nose, for me the Pusser's gets it thanks to its lovely burnt sugar kick. It's a very close call though, and on VFM Wood's steams into port first.

13th January 2020

What a rum!

I've tried a lot of rums over the years but for some reason I missed this one. So drinkable neat. Massive boozy warm flavours of dark fruits and sweet toffee with an aftertaste that lingers forever. My new favourite.

11th December 2019

As good as rum gets!

WOW..... as far as rum is concerned.... it doesn't get much better than this... once you adapt to the 54.5% ABV initial kick, you get a sublime warm taste and nose of demerara... just beautiful!!!..... don't waste it by mixing with coke... just a few ice cubes, let them melt a little, then sip... ENJOY!!

27th November 2019

Good very good

Very nice to drink on your own or with mates

19th November 2019

This is the best tot around, sublime.

Forget the nose and all the cheeky taste`s as described by the "never had a proper tot crew, most probably "T" men pretending to be experts". Drinking this the years just rolled away and took me back to tot time and gulpers and sippers I enjoyed for 28 years. This is the best--better than Wood`s --also 57%.

31st July 2019

Just the very best

The best proper Navy Rum out there. I was awarded my Submarine Service Dolphins with this Rum so it will always be My favourite.

17th December 2018

Superb art rum

The nose is by no means diminutive with a plenitude of sweet woody notes, dried walnut, Tunisian dates and seasoned fig. The prune note is extremely dry with cheesy touches adequately ripe to parry the dark, dulce and treacle base of the stew. Provencal Pot pourri au Van Gogh has its advocates but this British rum of rums paints in a solid Rubinesque foreground while the lasting Munchian darkness of the aftertaste is its true RSVP.

18th November 2018

If you like sherried whiskies...

I'm almost exclusively a whisky drinker and, unlike many whiskies, this is not a multi-layered experience - though, like whisky, it does open up in the glass and over time in a breached bottle. But my what a flavour - Christmas pudding in a glass, simply bursting with flavour.
I've had a fair few so-called sherry-bomb malts and blends and loved them but I suspect this rum has spoiled them for me - and at a very moderate price too - this will be my first port of call if I'm in the mood for PX notes.

19th August 2018

Needs at least a few more years ageing.

This is a neat appraisal, - Nose: Molasses, Golden Syrup, Treacle and Raw sugar.
Palate: Tar, bittersweet, burnt toffee...
Finish: Drying and fairly short.

1st August 2018

Taste Sensation!

Simply THE best tasting rum all my old palate desired...10/10 - and with the Grog mix makes a slightly longer drink, the massive flavour cuts thro so well - was like memories of xmasses past exploding in my mouth. Highly recommended!

1st May 2018

Big pudding nose

Dried fruit, figs, demarara sugar.
Big alcohol hit.
Tastes like liquid naval Christmas cake.
Very smooth yet packs a punch

4th December 2017

Ex PO Submariner
Was given a tasting set of five rums + another bottle of Pusser's Gun Powder Proof. Just comparing Wood's 100 Old Navy Rum with Pusser's. It a difficult job but someone has to do it. Conclusion has to be the Pusser's, but I will never say no to a Wood's.

10th September 2017

Value Plus

A superb rum at an excellent price. It might be 54.5% but its not harsh and the strength simply enhances the flavour

7th September 2017

Liquid gold. I have been suffering with a cold. Gunpowder blew it away!
BTW - It tastes delicious

22nd February 2017

The Real Deal

Aye, it's not my old fella said. This means, as a RN AB, joined in 1947,had his first tot in 1950, in Buenos Aires, I believe, this must be good stuff. He's not let me have a sniff of it though, the tight old git ;)....Up Spirits!!!

12th February 2017

Pusser's Rum- Gun Powder issue

Absolutely love this. Being an Old Salt, one cannot compare this issue with any other Rum. Would love to order some. Is there a process where this can be done

29th December 2016

Great rum, what rum is supposed to be, the best thing the Brits ever made, so I raise my glass of "Nelson's blood" in honor of 300 years of tradition and the salties who brought us this golden nectar!

13th October 2016

"Nelson's Blood"

I must have had at least ten years of legal tots of rum during my 22yrs service and this is up to the best I have tasted.

Should Have Joined the Navy . . .

Usually drink single malts or bourbon but thought I'd give a rum a try. Always liked a Lambs Navy with Coke but this stuff is far too good for mixing! First impressions on the nose were similar to a Speyside; lots of dried fruits, fig, date etc, burnt sugar and caramel. Nice thick mouth feel and I was pleasantly surprised by the smoothness. Didn't need to add water, even at this strength! Really impressed with this.

23rd May 2016

The best of the best

Not a rum lover, but absolutely love this stuff. About to order my third bottle thanks to an old matelot friend of mine. Thanks for introducing me to this stuff Hendy!!!

11th March 2016

Ex Bootie (Ships Marine)

A drop of 'Nelson's Blood'. brings back memories of tot time......Sippers, Gulpers and Sandy Bottoms!

26th December 2015

Ex Royal Navy..

Remember having the Blue Label Pussers Rum on board ship during "splicing the main brace" where the celebration of the official birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth was conducted. Those not accustom to the taste would offer it to others, or have it with Coca Cola.... (sacrilege to the pure taste and warm feeling it gave)

21st December 2015

Joe ramsey

Absolutely superb, ordered my second bottle.

31st July 2015

Rum Rat's dream

Having experienced drawing my tot (2in1) in the Royal Navy no other rum comes close or matches it like Pusser's. Still have my daily tot (Pusser's of course), only not as much as we were given back in the Sixties. Here's to the greatest Royal Naval tradition that was, Cheers!

29th July 2015

I prefer Pussers to any other. Up spirits

8th May 2015

Great rum

Top rum this nothing else really matches it.

31st December 2014

Welder Dave

Best rum I ever drank and the only rum that doesn't make my nose hairs curl or stomach turn. This is by far the best rum ever. Cheers to 300 years and many more, keep up the good work,

31st December 2014

Rum Bosun - Bude RNA

By far the best proprietary "TOT" available.......luckily we have a sympathetic supplier and reduces his profit as much as possible. We get through about 12 - 15 bottles per year, all dished up from an old "small ships barrel" (that leaks) so have to have a bucket inside LOL

13th August 2014

ex po seaman

Joined navy 1954, drew tot from age of. 20, dischard Jan 1970, and now 75 years old still having daily tot (neatters) but find this world beating rum exspensive but doing my best. Idefy you to find better.

14th February 2014

oops forgot review star rating - it only gives 5 stars - deserves many more!!

14th December 2013

is No other rum like it. Wonderful to still be able
to 'Up Spirits' properly.....Pincher Martin

Bob's Favourite!

I've been buying this from Master of Malt for a few years now and always buy two bottles at a time so my darling Dad is never disappointed at Christmas or on his birthday. He has always been a rum drinker but this brings an extra special twinkle to his eye. Thank you for your professional and speedy service and best wishes and a great bit thank you to you all at Master of Malt x

30th October 2013

just got two bottles of Woods 100,obviously I like rum,There are one or two which match the strength. Pussers is great, but getting hold of it takes time, and woods is slightly cheaper.Still *up Spirits* stand easy the holy ghost.Ex RN

8th October 2013

My Dad was in the navy in the sixties; he thinks this is the best rum. Enjoy a drop of Nelson's blood at tot time!

13th August 2013

first tasted in korea
still going strong.

25th July 2013

Mr Mymic

One of the top three rums I've ever tasted, other two being zafra 21 and el dorado 21. Massive toffee and raisins, toasted marshmallow, orange peel, maple syrup, sweet sweet sweet big, but gentle enough to drink neat.

12th July 2013

This is the same tasting rum that I drew when in the Royal Navy. As good as it gets, only no "sandy bottoms", just as many time around the buoy for 'Queens' as you like.

2nd June 2013

First tasted back in 1998 whilst serving in the Royal navy out in the west Indies. Many a good matelo fell foul to it's superior taste on a run ashore. best rum (apart from kraken) i've ever tasted "Splice the main brace" and treat yourself to the Grog.

1st May 2013

s ubmariner

best rum ever only drink it neat

21st April 2013

I've had maybe 20 different rums and this is the strongest one yet but not the tastiest. Wow, it is definitely a must try for any rum lover. It's good but not one that I'd do regularly. Full of flavor and a massive nose! Try at your own risk. An experienced rum drinker's rum, for sure.

29th March 2013

mr Single Malt

As the title suggests i like a good whisky but this Pussers Admiralty issue really stands high in both taste and value ... look no further this is as good as Rum gets

20th January 2013

mr d. chirgwin

once tasted never forgotten

23rd November 2012

Take that Napoleon!

Despite its strength drink it neat. Its smooth sweet and flavoursome and tastes of molasses. (the sugar product, not the burrowing mammals bottoms). Seriously this is a great value rum, try it, savour it! Enjoy! If they drank these tots at Trafalgar no wonder the English won!

4th August 2012

Mrs Norman

After many years in the navy my husband is still saying this is the best drink he has ever tasted

6th February 2012

Add some water you crazy fool

This rum is fantastic, but it only truely shines, I believe, if it's watered down slightly. Without water there is a distracting sulphur to the palate and finish. With water it's exceptional.

31st January 2012

Nearly forty years in the Royal Navy, drew my tot for 4 years before it was discontinued in 1970. This is the only rum for me.

10th November 2011

I Like it.

Not a rum person but this is the first rum I have actually liked straight. Has a great oak taste with dark burnt sugar sweetness. I Like it.

17th July 2011

after 16 years in royal navy having drawn my daily ration when i was 21,I have never found another rum to match this one. None of the other rums with the wording navy on them have ever seen the navy. i served 1954 to 1970 and pussers was the only rum issued. its the best.
