J Wray and Nephew Overproof Bottling Note

The best-selling high proof rum in the world. 90% of rum sales in Jamaica are of Wray and Nephew. Overproof is a very potent spirit indeed!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

The nose is fruity. Notes of molasses and spice. The palate is fruity and a little spirity. There are notes of banana and Demerara as well as spice and a little oak. The finish is long and spiced.

J Wray and Nephew White Overproof Reviews

Its not the real thing

Since the take over of wray n nephew, it has become clear that the drink has been watered down but still advertised as 63 percent. White rum was never made or bottled in the UK and certainly not at the shard london bridge. Very disappointing to see what they are doing. Now if I want a real bottle I have go already to jamaica to go and get anything close.

Simply the best. I was given a small bottle by a wonderful nurse (NHS) , who came from Jamaica. God bless that lady , It took me 4years to finish it because I wanted to keep it! I have ordered more now ,some of which I decant into the small bottle to keep it going!! Anton.

Candy is dandy, but Wray & Nephew is quicker!

Gives a good kick. Last time I got a kick like that, it was from a horse.

24th April 2020

Keep away from naked flames, seriously this shit is lethal.

The Blue Mountain

I join the throng, enthusiastic about this
"hot at your peril rum ", drink it and u realise why .
Strength comparisons to Trinidadian Puncheon rum are always a heated conversation and the water hue they share is the starting line. But from the off the charm of the Wray and Nephew comes in leaps and bounds .
It's like an old family friend who comes to visit and gets the party started .
The test splash tells you a firm NO it can't be drunk straight and your tongue and throat are scream in protest .
With water and ice you get in essence a very adult deep raw cane hit and successive glasses can quickly lead you down the garden path of merry .
Coke or ginger beer gives it a more interesting spin , like the passion when lovers meet . a great mixer , in a fruit punch its legendary , cranberry or tropical fruit juice are hurry come up but worthy, but if you hand gets away its tribulation.
There are big rums in the world but this the Blue Mountain of rums

The best

The best rum out. Pity that it is so costly when you think that in the Cayman Island that you can buy two 1l bottles at £15 and get one free, making it £5.oo per litre.

16th March 2019

Best Rum

This is my all time favorite rum.

7th March 2019

Strong but tasty

This stuff is great. Mixes perfectly with Coca Cola or Cherry Pepsi

24th February 2019

Very nice recommend

13th January 2019

Excellent rum!

Simply put, J Wray & nephew overproof rum is the gold standard of overproof rums! I tried it in 1981 while on vacation in Jamaica & have been a big fan of it ever since!

27th October 2018

Great quality and value for money

This is powerful stuff, but also VERY tasty, I sip it neat with a couple of teaspoons of water, it is strong, but the alcohol does not overpower the distinctive Jamaican taste. A little goes a long way, so good value for money.

8th October 2018

Excellent!!! Drinking Some Now!!

Excellent Excellent Excellent!!!

6th September 2018

I love this rum

It is strong but helps with my cold. You don’t need much because it’s definitely strong. I suggest sipping on it. I recommend not smelling before drinking

3rd September 2018

Ya mon

My all time favorite, my grandparents use to make the traditional W.I. Rum punch with this. Yrs later I mix it with lemonade and let the party begin. I love my Uncle Wray and the Nephews.

30th June 2018

It’s my craving

Love everything about this rum I used to drink dark rums but when I found this one lod god yeah 🤩🤩🤩😍 the best

27th June 2018

Watered down

It tastes really good and I want to like it more but I feel like the product that is imported to the US is not full strength or it is watered down... I don’t really get drunk from it...

24th May 2018

Not Recommended

I don't like it. It is too strong, and not particularly tasty. Even cut 50/50 with water it still doesn't have any of the taste of good rum. If you just want to get drunk, this will do it.

7th April 2018

I tried a shot neat. Don't try this neat. You will be filled with instant regret.

11th January 2018

I’ve been in daily permanant pain since drinking a small bottle of this four years ago
Got so wrecked I fell and damaged my neck vertebrae

The classic

The classic . Great as a anesthetic or mood enhancer. With coca cola of course

A journey from strong to sweet.

A sweet and smooth smell indeed. Very strong to begin, almost overwelhms you but you glide into a spice and sweet after taste of honey.

Potent yet mellow

Delicous and worth the little extra

Helped me forget my wife ( what was her name)

14th July 2017

Awesome! Just had it for The 1st time in Jamaica at the Palladium. The best Mojito I have ever had!

1st July 2017

Had my first sips straight the other day in the States. Now I'm looking for a source. A rare liquid. I cannot imagine mixing it with anything. That pure taste is so unique, I will have to get a case from somewhere.
For those used to 'shine', you'll want this in your left hand & your usual in your right hand. Sip both periodically, in any order. Tell your friends where you are so you can be delivered home later.

1st May 2017

Just wish USA would allow shipment of the real deal and not the watered down version. sigh

I am a little bias as I am Jamaican and this is the only Rum that is worth purchasing.

31st March 2017

Awesome tropical taste and smell

Absolutely love this rum with orange juice and a bit of Costco Margarita Lime mix....great taste and I love the smell of ripe bananas that wafts from the glass. An amazing drink and you don't need a full ounce either so a bottle goes a long way.

29th March 2017

The one and only.
Quite amazing that a liquor this potent can still be palatable.
A splash makes just about any tropical cocktail taste more authentic.
Still, be careful. This is not to be trifled with.

10th December 2016

Incredible product

This rum does exactly what it sets out to do and it does it VERY well. Tropical fruit flavours burst over the palate. Use this sparingly (a barspoon) in a rum/tiki cocktail and it lifts the entire drink like no other product I have ever come across. Highly recommended. Don't listen to the morons whinging about how strong it is because they've been shooting it neat.

6th November 2016

Fever reducer.

Very helpful for a body rub to reduce fever. Popular usage in Jamaica.

20th September 2016

W & N

Got to try W & N with Fresca. Yes Fresca. It's the best. A wedge of lime and WOW!

5th September 2016

Overproof and Fresca

Add a slice of lime.....huuuu.

15th August 2016

Jamaican moonshine

Imagine a clear liquor that, instead of corn, has the underlying flavor of sugarcane but with all of the kick of moonshine and you can imagine what this tastes like. A few shots will put you on your butt for sure. Great taken in shots (dont forget the chaser) or in mixed drinks.

19th July 2016

Just a few shots will put you on your butt. I don't remember anything.

One shot and it's like wow! Love it!

28th March 2016

Had this on numerous occasions very good in long drinks.

27th March 2016

Have no experience of the expensive, high end rums- only standard, dark and medium ones; so this is not an expert appraisal. Out of all the rums I've tried, this beats the pants of everything. Some are going to find it disgusting as other reviews show- I think you'd have to be a bit of a wuss to dislike it though. Rich, spicy, aromatic- Bananas, spices and something I can't define fighting against the other flavours in an interesting way. Very appealing after-taste. Caution-- more-ish- highly addictive- very strong. Amazing with grapefruit juice, sometimes a bit of pineapple juice too if you want it sweetened a bit. If you can find Lilt or Ting for a bit of fizz- excellent mixers. Would gladly have it with just fresh grapefruit juice any-time. It's put me off Scotch, because there's too much tame whisky nowadays.

6th March 2016

Great Rum

I mix it with lime juice and simple syrup. Mixes well with any fruit/tropical juice and makes Thee Best Pina Colada. Wouldn't recommend it straight.

3rd March 2016

This is the first rum I've had that I've really enjoyed. I've had other rums and not liked them at all, both dark and white. I bought this on an impulse and I can say that I've completely enjoyed this rum. I gravitate to a good ginger ale as a mixer (some may baulk) as I'm not a fan of cola or fruit juice.

29th February 2016

I love this with ice cream

5th January 2016

In Jamaica they call it "John Crow Bootie". Meaning "Buzzard's Ass". Really packs a punch, but when approached with caution, it's a good mixer.

6th December 2015

Mr Zed

Nice drink

17th November 2015

Two shots and im done

Love this stuff

11th September 2015

great overproof

Bit harsh straight however mixes great with tropical fruit juices or Sonic drive-thru ocean water

27th July 2015

george way

lovely rum, very strong,. a single shot with a can of pepsi max is just perfect. My daughter brought back a bottle from Jamaica. cheap in Jamaica dear here

24th June 2015

Respect and enjoy

This is a favourite of mine, it's not a sipping rum. If you respect this bottle then it can be a very good experience if not then you'll end up with a bad head as previous reviewers can attest, the fact that it says overproof on the bottle should give you a clue to it's strength. I find half a shot added to a cuba libre is more than enough. Smell - Very boozy strong, tropical fruits. Taste - White grapefruit juice, touch of lemon, warm after burn in the throat.

18th June 2015

David Bissmire

Mixes with anything, and really nice with mango juice, and lets face it you don't need much, no problem

23rd May 2015

Delightful Mojitos

I Wish I Could Find It Locally! It's The Quintessential Rum...

21st May 2015

One of the smoothest overproofs out there!!
Smooth and sweet just like me!

19th February 2015

It's Okay

Me and my friend opened a bottle of this since we received this as a gift from one of our other friends who went to Jamaica and the smell was absolutely foul. Even when we tried to plug our noses and drink it the taste reflected the smell. I would not recommend drinking it straight. We mixed it Coca-cola and it was okay, it over powered the soda though so it didn't really help. We tried it again with orange juice and it helped with the taste a lot better. It's a great drink to get you tipsy. You get a good hit after every drink.

26th January 2015

I thought I knew rum

But this stuff is just plain horrible. I tried coke, ginger ale, and even fresh squeezed orange juice. I can't drink it. Makes me nauseous. I normally drink rum straight up, by the shot, or with a side of water. I can burn through a bottle in less than a week. This stuff took over a year. Did I mention horrible? Gasoline tastes better. I'd give it 1 star if I could figure out how. I'd recommend a sample.

23rd January 2015

Amazing. Easy to drink, even straight.

But seriously, $42.49? I can get it at any liquor store in Tucson, Arizona for half that.

15th August 2014

O'mon due

one of a kind taste to say the least. wouldn't recommend drinking it straight

19th July 2014

Easy drinking - when mixed!! The best!!

I was introduced to this rum by my Jamaican Fiancé, a vodka drinker myself I mistakenly thought it would be similar or perhaps like the white rum wrong I was! My first taste was mixed with Pepsi and LOTS of ice....Loved it!!! It's my drink of choice (with Pepsi) when I'm in Jamaica and hitting the bars. Indoors we drink it with ice cold milk, very smooth and just the right kick for chilling together watching a movie...try it.

13th July 2014

Luv it

I'm tipsy off it right now. Love to drink it straight. Mhmmm

13th May 2014

cat open the bottle

I don't know how to open the bottle? ! There is a clear plastic cap that I cant gtt off! HELP

29th March 2014

smells like parafin

22nd March 2014

Prefer bleach

Oh dear God, how can anyone drink this straight?

I can only assume after repeated drinking the chemical burn has destroyed all tastbuds.

5th March 2014

I agree with the medicinal comment

It is a good rum, DEF not the best, id put flor de cana over it anyday, but yea as someone above stated slightly medicinal and needs to be mixed with juices rather than sodas to get the right flavor out....

14th January 2014

if is could speack i would write areview

11th January 2014

had half a shot after dinner....and ended up parking a leopard by the side of the road did my dinner partner...quite the foulest ,most undrinkable liquid i have ever had the misfortune to taste

17th December 2013

Give It a Try .....

I have been drinking this for many years with coke and two years ago, my fiance's aunt (who is Jamaican) says her favourite mixture is with orange juice. I looked at her as if she was crazy, but have to say, I am hooked. It has to be real OJ, not the cocktail. Also, another favourite of mine is mixing it with the mango/pineapple smoothie from McDOnald's, Try it! I told my friends and they love it! JW

26th October 2013

Mr mymic

Simply the best white rum on the market atm. The slight medicinal/burny raisin element to it may be off putting to some but i think it's wonderful, best drunk neat with respect with a glass of water on the side

13th July 2013

as of july 1, 2013 much cheaper in montego bay

locally sells for $6 US a bottle ( 1 litre ) and $10.50 US for 1 litre at montego bay airport duty free

3rd July 2013

holy cow!!

bought a 750 today for almost 1/2 of your price= 21.98.

9th February 2013

Holy molasses!!

This rum is one that needs to be savoured, yes it has a high ABV%, but it this allows this bottle to retain masses of flavour...any self respecting rum drinker worth his/her salt should have this in their collection.

28th November 2012

Steve Layland; W & N Overproof Rum (63%)

My partner was given a bottle of W&N and she came home and gave it to me as she does not drink rum. Well what a drink so full of tropical fruits one of the best drinks I have ever had on it own or with Coca Cola just amazing.

11th October 2012

Jordan and Bonnie: W & N Overproof Rum (63%)

WOW!! Unlike any other rum I have ever tasted. The bottle was brought back to me from Jamaica by a friend, knowing I am a rum enthusiast. I mixed my girlfriend and I a drink. Hers a single and mine a double. 1.5 Oz. rum - 10.5 Oz cola, and 3.0 Oz. rum - 9.0 Oz. respectively. Incredible full taste. very bright, with a hint of tropical fruits. Even the smell, when mixed, has this smell. went well with our steak and mashed with broccoli cheese basmati rice. Yes home made! To make it short... Get yourself a bottle, and either get gibbled, or enjoy it properly. It can be used both ways!
