A great 12 year old Demerara rum from El Dorado. This has won golds at the Caribbean Rum Taste Test in London 7 times in the first 10 years! There are nine stills at the distillery, and this is based around coffey still rum, and double wooden pot still rum.

One of my favorite rums! Layers of complexity; excellent flavor and a great example of a Demerara style rum! Enjoy! Although many prefer the 15yr old, I think the 12yr is more drinkable.

I bought this to build up my rum collection using Martin Cate's book, "Smuggler's Cove " as a guide. He classifies and groups rums in numerical categories based on his years of extensive research as a guide in selecting the best rums to make the Tiki cocktails from his bar, for which his book is eponymously titled. His list runs the gamut from rums which he "strongly endorses" to those he "happily tolerates". The ED 12 y/o is in the later category, with the designation #3, i.e. Blended aged rums, and replaced its predecessor, Plantation 5 y/o, which had just kicked the bucket. My impression was that the amber-coloured, somewhat sweet (but not cloyingly so) quaff was a decent every day sipper, but an even better mixer, especially for some of the Tiki drinks in Martin's, book, which, btw is obviously a labour of love and a work of art. As I peruse the pages, I wax nostalgic for a summer spent as a youth in Hawaii eons ago.
