The first release from Scotland's Dark Matter Distillers is Dark Matter Spiced Rum - very exciting stuff! Created in Banchory by two brothers, Jim and John Ewen, Dark Matter Spiced Rum is a molasses-based rum that features full-bodied notes of long pepper, fresh ginger, green peppercorns and allspice.

As a lover of spiced rum and heavy, peaty whisky, I am accustomed to drinking strong and flavoursome spirits neat, it's how I prefer it, but I'm afraid this is just too much. It is way too over spiced for my liking, I like cloves, but the cloves and pepper just dominate this drink, you cannot taste the rum at all, it is completely lost in the fireball that seems to stay on your tongue forever, making it more of a chore than an enjoyable drink. I've gone back to this bottle 3 or 4 more times, adding more and more ice in a futile attempt to like it, but with more than half a bottle left, I've given up on it, and have decided that the fate of the remaining rum will lie in a fruit cake, which at £25 a bottle is a crying shame! For me, the balance is all wrong in this rum, its all spice and heat at the sacrifice of any rum taste, which is simply acting as the vessel for this liquid vindaloo....Brewdog 500 cuts is the best balance of clove/winter spice and tasty dark rum that I have found so far for my personal taste.
Tried a fair few spiced rums and decided to go up in the price range. What a difference! This is awesome! Spicy, fruity, smooth and smokey. Not found anything as good yet.
An absolute favourite spiced rum, beautiful with a chilled coke and ice.
Not for me, way too much spice from the peppercorns and allspice, no balance. Neat, its too challenging and to bring that spice balance down I had to mix with so much coke I might as well have just had the coke. Sitting at the £30 price point I felt ripped off.
I bought this Rum for £25, RRP £29, so off to a good start, having saved £4. But that’s where the good vibes ended with this rum because, wow, how much do I not like this! It’s so fiery it’s brutal! I’m not kidding when I say it made my lips burn and literally gave me heartburn when I drank this neat! To cut to the chase, drinking this without a mixer is akin to having a Vindaloo Curry, it’s that intense. But having said that, even with tonnes of ice and mixed with Coca-Cola it still remains too searing for me. At the end of the day it boils down to this. If you like ginger, pepper, cloves, I’m presuming all these spices have been used, then I recommend this Rum. However Dead Man’s Fingers black bottle is very similar to this, but is priced at only £22. Just saying.
