Don Papa Rum Bottling Note

A richly flavoursome rum from the Philippines, inspired by the story of Papa Isio, who played a big part in the late-19th century Philippine revolution. The rum itself is made using sugar cane grown on the island of Negros in the Philippines and matured in oak barrels for 7 years, after which it is blended and bottled.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Fruity notes up front, with sweet tangerines and apricots. This is followed by vanilla ice-cream, drizzled with runny toffee sauce.

Palate: Bags-full of vanilla and cinnamon. Hints of raisin, sultana and marmalade.

Finish: Medium length with punchy cinnamon.

Overall: Rather exciting stuff.

Don Papa Small Batch Rum Reviews

Ignore the rum 'experts'...

Look, the taste of most foods and drinks is entirely personal - no two people will even describe ketchup in the same way so what chance has this got? For me it works really well; I tend to like the sweeter spirits these days and this with its big vanilla hit works well over ice. So, all you rum experts get over yourselves.

Ignore the haters

These are exactly the flavours I have been looking for, I fell for it at the first sniff. I personally like sweeter spirits, and this genuinely hits the spot. Tons of vanilla, and fat dried fruits makes it a tasty mouthful. I genuinely intend to always have a bottle in the house!

disappointing

Terrible chemical flavoured concoction. Bought by my grandchildren back in the summer as a Christmas present for their rum loving Papa. They thought it was something special. It was very well chosen and would have remained an absolute delight if only it had been left unopened.

So, it's like Marmite

Love it or hate it, don't let the rum snobbery fool you, Don Papa is a nice drink over ice :)
Just goes to show all things are subjective but it is definitely not deserving of a one star rating

30th December 2019

Great rum

I think it is great rum

1st December 2019

Sickly sweet syrup, definitely not rum

Please, save yourself the disappointment and spend your money elsewhere. This is some kind of horrific sweet liqueur, not rum. Awful stuff that has been marketed well and fooled many of us. Avoid at all costs

8th November 2019

Nice stuff

Look, there seems to be a bunch of reviews on here suggesting that this rum is awful, not even rum, fake, dish-water etc etc. That is the view expressed by the reviewer, it is not defacto. So for this reviewer, it's a nice easy drinking rum. If you like sweet vanilla tasting spirit then give it a try. If not climb of your high-horse and just put it down to experience.

Horrible stuff

I was given a bottle of this for my birthday by my son who was taken in by the packaging, the price and the marketing (is indeed I could have been). He was embarrassed to have given this to me once he had had a sniff of this. This is truly awful. It’s nose is like cream soda with added chewy sweets. The palate is chemically and the after taste is thankfully short. I am not even sure that this actually rum. If nothing else this product demonstrates the need to have some international standards for rum in the same way that some other spirits have.

Disgusting

Really horrible, I feel like a mug for having bought it.

23rd August 2019

Rum & Raisin ice cream in a glass !!

This isn't your typical rum flavour, so if you want that then don't buy this. What i will say is if you like a smooth rum then this is lovely. On it's own it's rich and velvety with a vanilla scent and taste. I tried it with some ice and coke and oh wow if you like rum and raisin ice cream then you'll love this and not want it to end.

9th August 2019

This is very bad spiced rum.

What the hell? Bought from Sainsbury's expecting to be a medium level aged rum decent enough for sipping. So far from that rhetoric it is unbelievable. The rest of the bottle is going in the punch bowl on Friday night.

30th July 2019

Enough said.

I bought this today having not seen this brand before and having a keen interest in Rum couldn't resist the idea of a Phillipines brand. Tried it this evening, I thought I'd opened a bottle of Southern Comfort! Weird. Sweet marmalade cough medicine. It's not Rum.

16th March 2019

Abysmal

Bought this on offer here in the UK. Still vastly overpriced for what it is - spiced rum drink. Overpowering cream soda smell/taste, no depth or complexity on offer, far too sweet. Fatrumpirate review tests confirms that there are lots of additives in this - vanillin being one.

15th March 2019

Vanilla extract?

I don’t believe that this is real rum.
It tastes a bit artificial and way to much vanilla.
It is a nice mixer. But it’s over priced.

22nd November 2018

Good but could be better

For the price it is pretty good. I was also an American expat living in PI at the time and felt I should support local products. But it just did not give me the smooth palate the my rum of choice, Capt. Morgan Special reserve could produce.
However you will not be disappointed as the flavors are interesting. And PI does need local industry.

3rd February 2018

Wow!

Excellent! A unique smooth and flavorable rum.

7th January 2018

low quality over hyped fake product

This is a fake rum designed to appeal to the unknowledgeable but moneyed consumer. tastes like cheap rum infused with cinnamon and sugared to death. no info about its makers, no distillery tours or viewing of their supposed oak aging (because they have none). an embarassment to the filipino people. do not buy.

Disagreeing with the last few reviewers....

I don't pretend to know all that much about rum production - I have been a malt whisky drinker for much longer than a rum drinker - but this rum has converted me and a fair few of my friends to the wonderful world of rum. Don't get me wrong, I still love my single malt but there is something very easy drinking about this rum. It has the wonderful smell of Christmas in a bottle, seriously delicious smelling, and it tastes fantastic - so smooth and drinkable you should never put ice in it, let alone mix it but of course that is a personal opinion. I bought a bottle of Mourant rum and that will definitely have to be mixed with something as it is not very pleasant. I am a fan of Millonario XO, Diplomatico, Angostura 1919 and Zacapa 23 year old but this is my go to Rum. Having said that I have just taken a new delivery and some previously untried ones and those are shaping up pretty well too!

28th July 2017

Not Rum. Not good. It's bad in every way imaginable, except the marketing.

This rum is a cash grab concocted by corporate marketers and ad men attempting to appeal to the discerning drinker. And by "discerning" I mean: has money and knows diddly squat about spirits, especially rum.

If rum had the rules and regulations of Scotch or Bourbon this stuff wouldn't even be allowed to market itself as rum. Small batch?!? LOL! Next time you're in the Philippines I dare you to visit this no doubt charming boutique distillery... Perhaps spend an evening sampling their rum and experiencing the terroir of the region. I'm sure a day at the distillery, which absolutely isn't some industrial beverage facility, would be very beautiful and romantic...

Look, the truth is that this is industrially produced sugar/molasses based (I'm being generous here) ethanol which has been gussied up with all manner of sweeteners, artificial flavours, colours and god knows what else (glycerol and vanillan at least, according to lab tests) to make it palatable--and it isn't! Bad enough that they call it rum, but it commits an even greater sin than playing fast and loose with the truth -- it tastes bad!

Oh, and aged 7 years? Hilarious. I doubt it's been aged at all. After all, we all know what age statements mean on rum (hint: it rhymes with truck ball). It's a good thing rum drinkers don't seem to care about things like age statements and hidden additives, otherwise they might start getting what they're paying pay for: quality. Oh, and the corporations behind this rum-esque liqueur may no longer be able to rake money hand over fist from credulous people with more money than sense.

20th July 2017

Absolute sham

This stuff is a sham. Marketed as "Made in the foothills of Mount Kanlaon". There is absolutely no distillery anywhere near the foothills of Mt. Kanlaon. Age statement is an absolute joke as well, considering the distillery hasn't existed long enough to be releasing rum of the ages that they state. The entire rum industry desperately needs a shakeup and these people are a shining example of why. Vote with your pocket - avoid this sweetened liqueur.

12th January 2017

Fruity, sweet

Absolutely refreshing. Strong vanilla and molasses palate.

8th May 2016

Is it rum?

Don Papa, founded in 2011, produced first rum in 2012... So... How can it be 7 years old?
No mentioning of distillery...
No address can be found for distillery...
I am residing for 3 years in Philippines and have been looking into this product for a while. I have been trying to figure out where they actually make it but it stays a mistery.
While it is very drinkable it is full of additives. They are marketing this product very well but it is not an artisanal produced authentic rum. It's a commercial product meant for profits. Here in Philippines it's normal to lie to consumers. There is no control on most things and people's access to information is limited.
Should be labeled a spiced rum maybe, or spiced liquor would be even more correct.

Drinks very smooth, great for certain coctails. Alot of cinamon and caramel tints. Alot of sugar.
I can appreciate this drink although I cannot appreciate their marketing.

24th February 2016

DO NOT BUY!

This not rum, this is liquid sugar with additive.
A rum to avoid! you can get a better rum for less money and a authentic taste

10th February 2016

Very Nice

Best value and quality for an under appreciated rum.

26th December 2015

Best rum I've ever tasted

I'm not the biggest rum fan but after tasting this I'm a convert! Perfect for long winter evenings

24th December 2015

Yum Yum!

I bought this rum after tasting it in a wine shop. It's really smooth and easy to drink. It's a flavourful spiced rum but tastes more 'grown-up' then the regular Morgans spiced rum that most are used too. Really tasty and lovely straight-up with a bit of ice! Good value.
