Appleton Estate Signature Blend

Formerly known as V/X and no longer carrying an age statement, Appleton's signature blend has been aptly renamed Signature Blend. A blend of rums matured in smaller barrels before being married in oak casks then bottled at 40% ABV.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Peppery and spicy, a green, grassy note with wonderfully buttery toffee and a hint of pear drops.

Palate

Medium body, quite spicy with black pepper and chilli, a little butter and vanilla.

Finish

Slightly astringent, medium length.

Not the man it used to be .

When Appleton decided to freshen up the range possibly due to them losing the Sainsburys contract by deleting the VX and calling it the Signature they lost a generation of customers because this is what we gave if we wanted to bring something a bit special to a function. It's no longer special The virgin splash reveals spice cane warmth it tries to be next level but falls short in satisfying , making you yearn for the original. Mixed with ginger beer or coke is what this rum is bred for but just not interesting enough to make you keep coming back . I dont think Appleton realized what they had with the VX .

Excellent drink I

I can honestly say without a word of a lie. That I have never tasted rum. This good. It goes down really smooth. And I would rate this as one of the best I have ever had the privilege to drink .

first bottle

Really nice for the special offer price £16, instead of £ 21). Opens up nicely after 15 mins- Cinnamon apple nose with mellow spicy marzipan alcohol. Vanilla, toffee, apple palate. There's a heart to it that I have found in Wray & Nephew's - dry, tropical and fruity, cinnamon, raisin and a very enjoyable 'fusty' tinge (think this is the Jamaican 'funk' you read about). Mouth feel, satisfying and medium thick. Finishes long for me.. same flavours as palate; sticks around after diminishing to seared brown sugar vanilla. This is an amateur assessment: I lack broad experience of rum- No experience at the high end of the market. Seems logical that it feels like halfway ground between white rum and navy rum; a comfortable place to be. A reviewer somewhere suggested mixing with pure apple juice. Tried that and it's delicious. I'm not experienced enough to give it a star rating. From experience of supermarket rums- an easy 4.
