A delicious single malt from the Yoichi distillery, founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934. Taketsuru deemed the terroir to be perfect for whisky production, as this 15 year old will testify.

The nose is gentle and creamy with light fruits and a little nutty development. The palate is quite sweet with notes of subdued peat, winter spice and a nutty note. The finish is long and beautifully bittersweet.
The only Whisky better than this, in my opinion, is the 20 year old but that's twice the price and only slightly better. I don't drink Whisky much so for me to spend £80 on a bottle, it has to be something special.
The thing about yoichi is its batch variation, ive had distinctly average malts but ive also had some stunners. Right now ive got a bottle of this open which is one of the best ive had; subtle nose with a light splash of sherry, sweet start to the mouth and very fruity. Handful of nuts appear as it all goes savoury and good quality smoke wafts in (very light and quality cigar). Just when you think its done the sweetness makes a reprieve and last long with a lovely kiss of sherry. No sulphur in sight. No chill filtering and maybe 46-48% and this would be remarkable.
