Description

This limited edition South African single grain whisky from Bain's was originally released as a Travel Retail exclusive. The whisky spent its initial five years of maturation in bourbon casks, followed by another five years finishing in American oak shiraz red wine casks, bringing generous layers of earthy red fruit and vanilla to the toffee and spice at its core. Bottled at cask strength, and in a nice big one-litre bottle too.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Bold, rich notes of shiraz-soaked oak lead the way, backed by vanilla, ripe fruit salad, and a touch of pepper.

Palate

Drying and tannic, with vinous red fruits, bold oak, toffee, and cacao.

Finish

Woody spices, spiced red fruits, robust oak, grilled pineapple, and vanilla.

A real surprise

I’m a 30yr scotch drinker with a broad palate, who has recently been branching out to world whiskies. I picked this up in Joberg airport about 3yrs ago and could not have been happier. The specs were great, it was a chance to try my first South African Whiskey and I couldn’t recall having a wine cask matured whiskey before. With a price of £30, it seemed like a free hit. I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The cask influence is strong but well integrated and compliments the distillate to my palate. I suspect it will be too potent for some without water, (I’m used to cask strength drams so enjoyed it straight), but adding water doesn’t detract and certainly softens power of the ABV. I imagine some with feel the addition of water will make the dram more approachable and well rounded, but it’s not challenging other than the strength. As you would expect, loads of red fruits and wine notes, there is sweetness and tannins but well balanced. It is drying but this is mitigated by adding water. The distillate is detectable and the finish is medium to long. For me this is outstanding value if you enjoy wine cask matured whiskey, particularly when you consider this is a 1ltr bottle. I was gutted when I finished my bottle and delighted when I found it was no longer a travel exclusive and available online. I’m now on my second bottle and suspect this may be permashelf for me moving forward, unless the price increases, as I suspect this will be a popular novelty with friends and a hit whenever I host tastings. Recommended!
