A 28 year old single malt from the Bruichladdich Distillery, bottled up by those That Boutique-y Whisky Company folks! The label has all sorts of hints to a gamut of bottlings from Bruichladdich's history, so any Bruichladdich boffin out there will be excited about this one...
Batch 19 is a release of 1,123 bottles.
‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ bottles single malts, single grains and bourbons from a variety of renowned distilleries as well as producing award-winning blended malts and blends. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.
A gigantic hit of melted dark chocolate, with aromas of sponge cake alongside tart cherry jam and lots of dark berries, reminiscent of a Black Forest gâteau. A hint of barley and toasty oak follows.
Lots of dried fruit here, with slightly burnt coffee, a good hit of oak spice and aromatic warming baking spice, with silky caramel.
Blackcurrant jam, with loads more of that berry sweetness and bitter dark chocolate lingering on a clean and spicy finish.
I was hoping for something a bit like a Bruichladdich black art unpeated, but this lacks all the depth of layers and many of the aged notes. No leather, minimal tobacco and much less sweetness, it tastes about a decade younger than it is. The overwhelming note is spice - like a rye or a young pot still - not as balanced as you'd hope at this age statement. It's not a bad whisky, I just had such expectations from a 28 Bruichladdich, for my palette not worth the splurge.
Absolute beast of a whisky. Master of Malts' tasting notes are on point, with the addition of an old leather note that compliments this whisky greatly. It's a splurge of a bottle but worth every penny
