From Dramfool comes the FINAL release of the Jim McEwan Signature Collection and the brand saved the best till last: Jim’s favourite three casks. It's been quite a ride. How often does a whisky legend personally nose and select casks for a collection that honours his contribution to the spirit?
Bruichladdich 9.1 was distilled on 16 September 2010 and was aged for 13 years in a single cask (#2329), a first-fill Premier Cru Supérieur Sauternes barrique. The château that provided the cask was the only one to be awarded this ultimate status in the 1855 Official Classification and today it remains held in the highest regard by wine lovers. The single malt Scotch whisky was bottled in January 2024 as Release 9.1 and like everything in the collection, it was presented un-chill filtered, with no added colour and at a cask strength (in this case, 63% ABV). This cask yielded only 236 bottles.
The tasting note is from Jim McEwan MBE, who provides an insight into texture rather than a finish.
The combination of the Islay DNA comes through beautifully in harmony with the oak & the malted barley. No chill filtration, no colouring, its a super pure spirit. The sweetness of the barley underpins the fruit overture from the Sauternes and adds a freshness that is unique to its slumber on the Atlantic Ocean.
The sweetness from the barley sugars works brilliantly with malt extracts & the fruit creates a unique palate experience and at 63.0% you’re walking on sunshine. Flavours of vanilla extract bring harmony to the experience and throughout the Islay maturation you’re transported to the Island of Distilleries!!
Texture: The texture is beautiful due to slow distillation that is the Bruichladdich way plus the full term maturation in the warehouse next to the Atlantic Ocean.
