Ardbeg 1998 (bottled 2004) Very Young

The first part in the Young series from Ardbeg, tracking the development of Ardbeg whisky, aged for just a few years, all the way up to the standard Ardbeg at 10 years old. Very interesting indeed, and now extremely rare.

This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Very peaty and spicy. Notes of cut hay, fresh herbs, smoke, kippers. Hints of the coast, lime juice, coal tar.

    Palate

Rich and thick. Very malty, hints of salinity, very phenolic, black pepper, chilli, digestive biscuits. Huge and intense.

    Finish

Smoky, spicy, peaty. Tarmac on a hot day. Some caramel sweetness and citrus.

    Still brilliant

Same as the reviewer below, except that I recently discovered (2019) an opened but 3/4 full bottle that I'd tucked away and forgotten (along with a similar bottle of 15YO Dalwhinnie). Neither have lost anything for being opened. They might not gain anything in the bottle, but they haven't lost anything in my opinion.

    O.U.T.S.T.A.N.D.I.N.G!

Bought a bottle in 2005 for £24. Had always been a huge fan of the Islay's but got absolutely floored by the outstanding flavour and phenomenal complexity of this young fellow. I developed a deep and profound love for it very quickly and managed to share some with my number one single malt whisky friend who not surprising felt exactly like I did about it. A truly phenomenal whisky. If only I knew then what I know now..I would have bought everything in sight. £24... Outstanding and likely never to be matched again, ever.
