Drum roll please, folks… after too-long a hiatus we are packing our bags and heading to Fèis Ìle 2018!

Good folks of whiskydom, we have news. After a four-year break (yes, and that parking, ahem, incident) we are returning to Islay for the dramming extravaganza that is Fèis Ìle. Team MoM is making final preparations for a voyage to the Islay Festival of Music and Malt! And we have many a treat in store for you whether you are likewise heading for the island or not…

From this Saturday (26 May) to the following one (3 June) we will be busily heading to the official distillery days, plus a selection of rather marvellous additional locations to keep us on our toes. And… the freebies are back!

Welcome news for peat lovers: Islay-based single malt whisky producer Ardbeg is to double its production capacity with a brand spanking new still house and two additional stills.

It’s all go at The Glenmorangie Company! Mere weeks after announcing expansion plans at its Highland distillery Glenmorangie, the firm has submitted a planning application for a multi-million-pound still house at Ardbeg Distillery.

The “traditional-style” development will be constructed on a site formerly occupied by warehouses (they were demolished in 1980!), and will see a new wash still and spirit still bring the distillery’s total still count up to four. The existing still house will be repurposed to accommodate extra washbacks. Meanwhile the construction of a new boiler house, set a little further away from the main distillery building, is already underway.

If you’re partial to an Islay dram, by now you’ll be familiar with Ardbeg An Oa – but how much do you know about its makeup? Brendan McCarron, head of maturing whisky stocks at The Glenmorangie Company, details how Ardbeg’s first permanent single malt release for almost 10 years came to be.

“We wanted to make something that is [typically] Ardbeg, permanently available, sustainable, and different,” outlines Brendan McCarron, addressing a handful of journalists at an intimate lunch in London hotel Flemings Mayfair. The brief for what would eventually become Ardbeg An Oa was set three years ago, under the premise of expanding the distillery’s core range to four. The team wanted to create a dram that “stands next to Ardbeg 10; something that you can compare and contrast to”.

Space. The final front ear. Home of paranoid robots named HAL, space stations that ain’t no moons, cats and David Bowie. Recently whisky has also been crowbarred into this list with alarming regularity. So much so, that I thought it was time to take another look at it all.

You see, having inexplicably found myself in Disneyland Paris for a few days back in August, during which time I naturally took up residence on Space Mountain, I now quite reasonably consider myself to be the office expert when it comes to all things space.

Feis Ile Islay That Boutique-y Whisky Company

As some of you may already know, we’re sadly not going to be at Fèis Ìle this year. I know, I know. We had a good run though – attending the last four years in a row as Master of Malt, keeping you all (hopefully) entertained whether you’d made it along or not, running some great promotions and even kitting many of you out with some top notch drams, t-shirts and snazzy tote bags. And it was our absolute pleasure to do so.

There’ll be no Malt Mobile to look out for this year though (much to the delight of Bowmore’s bollards), no gratuitous shots of limited edition whiskies next to hot tubs or Port Ellen tastings and no week long series of our ramblings from the event. But if you are indeed going, especially if it’s your first time, allow us to present our little guide to this year’s festival…

Tales From The Isle Ardbeg Feis Ile

Greetings traveller,

In this final issue of Tales From The Isle everybody was very much in the mood for the upcoming football extravaganza. You must know about the huge sports competition that’s now upon us and that everybody has been talking about all around the world – that’s right, it’s the The Ultimate Ardbeg Distillery Swamp Football Tournament!

Ardbeg Day is celebrated all over the world, not least at the distillery on Islay as part of Fèis Ìle. It’s also fair to say that when Ardbeg do something, they do it properly, so there’s an awful lot to tell you about here. I’d packed my yellow and blue havaianas and a Brazuca football, but there’s always still time for a beastie or two as well…

Tales From The Isle Bowmore Feis Ile

Greetings traveller,

In today’s Tales From The Isle I’d planned to bring you the story of the devil’s final visit to Bowmore in some detail, but an action-packed day at Fèis Ìle means that this issue has rather taken on a life of its own! The story is still worth telling, however, if only in brief. The famous round church in Bowmore, constructed ten years before the distillery was established, is said to be round so that the devil had no corners to hide in. According to legend, the architectural trap worked so well that when he did finally pop by in 1837 he was instantly spotted and pursued down the road by an angry Christian mob. Entering the distillery buildings, he made his escape by hiding within a cask of whisky that was being loaded onto the Maid of Islay for transport to the mainland. It’s said that he never dared to return.
