Diageo has unveiled 9 out of 10 of the always hotly-anticipated Special Releases bottlings for 2018, due to be hitting shelves in autumn – with one whisky’s identity remaining a secret until later this year. 2018 will be the first year the Special Releases won’t feature a Port Ellen or Brora since the series launched.

Diageo has given us a tantalising peek at most of the Special Releases expressions due to be launched in autumn. These bottlings never fail to fascinate the whisky enthusiasts of the world, and once again a good few of them have us raising our eyebrows in excitement.

We’ve offered our blog readers two delicious alternatives to Irish whiskey for this St. Patrick’s Day – poitín and gin. However, there remains another path you could follow. The Path of Irish Cream Liqueurs.

If you’ve been keeping up with the blog posts this week, you’ll have seen two features each offering up a switcheroo on the traditional tipple of Irish whiskey for St. Patrick’s Day (which is occurring this Saturday, 17 March). Our Adam gave us an in-depth history lesson on poitín, while our Annie took us on a whistle-stop tour of Irish gin distilleries. This is all well and good, but you might be thinking there’s another tipple well worth exploring. I am, of course, referring to the extreme excellence of Irish cream liqueurs.

  • We chat with Philip and Simon Thompson to get the scoop on the Dornoch Distillery’s whisky and gin developments
  • We also taste their range of 10 Experimental Batch Gins, which you can get your hands on right now, exclusively from Master of Malt

  • It’s fair to say that we’re excited about what’s going on at the Dornoch Distillery. Simon and Philip, the Thompson brothers (no relation to the Thompson Twins), were already running the award-winning Dornoch Castle Hotel Whisky Bar, which specialises in rare old whiskies offered at a fair price. Then they go and announce they’re founding a whisky distillery with a plan to “…make a style of whisky which has long been extinct”, alongside creating gins from scratch – no bought-in neutral grain spirit used whatsoever. Consider our interest piqued within an inch of its life.

    Pikesville 6 Year Old Rye

Cast your mind back to November of last year and you might just remember seeing a fantastic rye whiskey come through our doors – the Pikesville 6 Year Old 100 Proof Straight Rye. Not only was it rather yummy and a Master of Malt exclusive, it also made an entertaining whoosh-ing noise as it flew right back out the door in a very swift manner. This might have had something to do with Jim Murray naming it his Second Finest Whisky in the World shortly after it arrived (and it’s since been crowned World’s Best Rye Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards 2016)…

If it whoosh-ed past you the first time, you’ll be happy to know that Pikesville 6 Year Old 100 Proof is back in stock! Go a get yourself a bottle now! (Update: Aaaaaand it’s gone. Again.)
