What's in a name? Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon 12 Year Old whiskey is called whiskey because it's produced in America. Were it from Scotland it would be spelled Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon 12 Year Old whisky, rather than whiskey.
The nose is quite thick and full. There is a beautiful sweetness with notes of toasty oak, toffee, spicy stewed fruits, a touch of resin and a lovely crème anglaise character. The palate is full and sublimely smooth with notes if stewed Bramley apples, malmsey, a touch of aniseed and a hint of spice. The finish is of good length with toasty oak notes and a creamy sweetness.
I ran this tasting with two drams. The first was on a dry palate, and it was a little overwhelming with the 47% alcohol content. However, after adding a drop of water, the sweetness and oaky bourbon aromas were opened up sublimely on both nose and palate.
My second glass, however, was consumed at full strength on a wet palate. After knowing what to expect from dram one helped my taste buds decipher all the subtle nuances of this 12 year old spirit.
Tasting notes do include the toffee banana mentioned by the previous reviewer, however my speyside single malt-influenced palate managed to pick up that wonderful oakiness with more sweetness in the main palate and finish.
Overall, I would recommend and scotch drinkers to first try the Glendronach 21 in order to prepare themselves for the fire of the alcohol content, and to prepare their mouths with a splash of water in their first glass. I am trully impressed.

I'm a regular single malt drinker, Speyside or Highland, and this is my first, and last, bourbon. From a nose of airfix glue and toffee vodka, through a palate of rough spirit alcohol and cheap toffee banana flavouring to a mouth burning finish and horrible metallic aftertase, this was truly the worst whisky I've ever sampled. I'm no expert, but even to my modest palate this was undrinkable. If Master of Malt wont take it back for testing, its going down the sink.

Elijah Craig is an excellent bourbon! Like a previous reviewer stated, it incites a definite WOW moment. Craig is sweet, smokey, leathery, and jam packed with charred oak flavours. The nose includes fruits, vanilla and memories of a leather saddle shop. I have yet to find a bourbon in my city in Canada that will come close to Elijah Craig. It will be a staple in my collection for years to come.

It's a short drive to Kentucky from here in SE Tennessee. The price here is $27. (About 16.87 pounds) Location, location, location! I like it. It's full bodied, yet smooth as silk.

I have bought this as a present on the advise of reviewers for a loved one who is a big Bourbon drinker, I could not order on this site as too late to arrive for Christmas so went to Selfridges where this was £48! Luckily I was stood next to a very nice man who suggested I go to M&S where I purchased it for £25.99!My purse is having a very merry Christmas!

A great bourbon with a sweet, but grassy nose. A rich palate which is smooth and easy to sink, then a long sweet finish.
Suffice to say, the bottle didn't last long. Will definitely buy again.

Can buy this whiskey at M&S Marks&Spencer for less then £27 and it's a expensive shop. The masters of Malts should do much better..then M&S

i used to drink scotch and single malt when i could afford, for the last 4 /5 years my taste buds are craving for bourbon - i live in Toronto, where the price is high and the supply is 5% of what you find in the US, having said that i have had the opportunity to drink some of the known and the unknown ones - this is very close to my hear, can't describe you the taste unlike other reviewers; but if complexity and smoothness go hand in had - this is the one!

Love this stuff. Better than Woodford reserve & Pappy. So rich, sweet & creamy.

I got this after reading the positive reviews. What a flavor! It's so smooth and creamy I could hold it and swirl it in my mouth for hours the after taste is rich and defined, smoky, woody, sweet & fruity. Absolute bargain and better than some at 4X the price.
one of the finest I've ever had

Not keen on the £10 price hike - poor show, this was £27 a few months back

This is an excellent example of what Bourbon can be. Full bodied and rich, with all of the flavors you expect a bourbon to have. One of my favorites especially since I live in the U.S. where I can get this for $25 USD.

I really enjoyed this bourbon although it is not my favorite. I like a few bourbons better including Knob Creek and Evan Williams 10 year old Single Barrel. It's all a matter of personal taste. Elijah Craig is high up on my list of the best.
16th April 2013
Strong Oak (at least for a Bourbon), Salt, Caramel and in the end Vanilla as well as a gentle smoke note that stays in my mouth for several minutes after the brown liquid went down my throat. A "must have" for all Bourbon lovers
12th April 2013
This was given to me by a very good friend and have to agree this is a very fine bourbon. I agree with the banana flavour - like a banana soaked in a sweet liqueur and cooked on a barbeque, "hot and smokey". It is so smooth, and the after-taste is just as good as the initial flavour. Well done my friend!

A wonderful bourbon
25th January 2013
The nose is really salted caramel. Best tasted with half as much room temperature water to get the full benefit of the complex flavour and aftertaste: a real winner.

Tried this whilst watching Avengers Assemble. Have to agree with the other reviewer. I got banana and caramel sweetness kicks as well. This is a cracker of a Bourbon. It's one that makes you go WOW (Thats a CAPITAL WOW) for a first time tasting. Yum Yum. Even made the film seem better than it was! Maybe had too much );-}
25th October 2012
This is certainly a strong and fiery Bourbon! A delightfully smoky, caramel nose. To me it tastes quite strongly of bananas as well as caramel and oak. Strongly recommend. Will be buying this for years to come!
11th October 2012
I have to be honest that my first taste of this Elijah Craig made me wonder if I was out of my comfort zone. Lovely smooth flavor, then it had a really strong kick (a real eye opener), but then the aftertastes kick in and they are delightful.
Easily one of my favorite bourbons and will definitely be back for more!
