The brand was created by John ‘Johnnie’ Walker. Walker began his spirits business selling whisky from his grocery store in Ayrshire, Scotland. His whiskies were very popular and following his death in 1857, the company was passed down to his son, Alexander Walker. Alexander, with the help of his son, Alexander Walker II, established the brand and greatly increased its popularity. The first blend - Walker’s Old Highland - was created in... 1865. The rectangular bottle was introduced in 1870. During the early twentieth century Alexander Walker II and George Walker, Johnnie’s grandsons, established the colour naming system. In 1908, the Johnnie Walker name was introduced to the product when the Managing Director, James Stevenson re-branded the range. The walking figure was also conceived around this time. Today, there is a good range: Red, the international best-selling Scotch blend, Black, Swing, Green, Gold and the premium, Blue label.
