Insider knowledge: MacPhail's 40 Year Old whisky is named whisky by virtue of the fact it's from Scotland. If distilled in America the spelling would be MacPhail's 40 Year Old whiskey, as opposed to whisky.
The nose is of good body and rather sweet. There are notes of cocoa and spice, dried peels and mixed nuts with notes of crème de cacao with a little winter spice and fruitcake. The palate is quite full and rich. There are notes of winter spice, a solid dried fruit note with a little buttery toffee and honey, a touch of sherried oak. The finish is long and silken with notes of salty butter and sherry.
