Jim Murray's Whisky Bible
What's in a name? Caol Ila 16 Year Old 1996 (cask 9512) - Old Malt Cask (Douglas Laing) whisky is called whisky because it's produced in Scotland. Were it from America it would be spelled Caol Ila 16 Year Old 1996 (cask 9512) - Old Malt Cask (Douglas Laing) whiskey, rather than whisky.
Nose: Classic Coal Ila notes of brine and beach barbecue.
Palate: Sweet peat, coastal air and a hint of cappuccino.
Finish: Fairly long with sweet smoke.
Overall: Coastal, sweet and slightly smoky, unmistakably Caol Ila.
