Jim Murray's Whisky Bible
Insider knowledge: Caol Ila 16 Year Old 1996 (cask 9512) - Old Malt Cask (Douglas Laing) whisky is named whisky by virtue of the fact it's from Scotland. If distilled in America the spelling would be Caol Ila 16 Year Old 1996 (cask 9512) - Old Malt Cask (Douglas Laing) whiskey, as opposed to whisky.
Nose: Classic Coal Ila notes of brine and beach barbecue.
Palate: Sweet peat, coastal air and a hint of cappuccino.
Finish: Fairly long with sweet smoke.
Overall: Coastal, sweet and slightly smoky, unmistakably Caol Ila.
