The Handlebar: Historically worn with pride on the top lips of some of the greatest and most legendary members of the armed forces, the Handlebar, is a particularly thick upper lip covering, with protruding graspable extremities, usually waxed to perfection. When on a recent exchange posting, a respected and superbly moustached RAF Lieutenant clashed with the US Air Force rulebook, which forbids such impressive growth to adorn the lips of their officers. Fortunately, common sense prevailed and the classic British ‘stiff upper lip’ ruled the day.  More info

The Dali: Tricky to perfect, requiring artificial styling aids, the Dali has long, narrow points which curve upwards at the edge of the mouth. It is styled on its originator, Salvador Dali, who, it is said, used his remarkable facial protrusions to help paint his surrealist masterpieces.  More info

The Chevron: Thick and wide, usually covering the whole of the area above the upper lip. Quintessentially worn with aplomb by everyone’s favourite American heart throb, the great Magnum PI, aka Tom Selleck.  More info

The Walrus: A huge, impressively bushy and bulbous thatch, which often hangs down over both lips, covering the entire mouth. Notable examples include the irrepressible Dick Strawbridge and Australian fast bowler, Merv Hughes. Useful insulation in the winter months and a particularly handy place to hide one’s contraband.  More info

The Pencil: Sometimes controversial with wearers of the ‘fuller’ moustache varieties, but undoubtedly suave, sleek and as svelte as an Eel’s tail. Last spotted on the top lip of American filmmaker, John Waters and the iconic British motor racing legend, Graham Hill.  More info
